Once Neversecond made moves to sponsor some of the best trail runners in the sport like Jim Walmsley, Katie Schide, Dani Moreno, Emkay Sullivan, and Joseph Gray, it became clear that the company readied themselves for limelight. Neversecond is here to stay.
When I had the opportunity to snag a sample pack of the C30 energy gels from Neversecond, I was particularly excited to try their caffeinated gels. I usually respond well to caffeine in races, but only to a point; with how much caffeine is in most gels, they tend to push my stomach a bit too far in the wrong direction. Neversecond's caffeinated gel line includes only 75mg per gel--a welcome step down from the 100mg of caffeine from Precision I usually take before hard efforts.
Before I get into the details, here are a few potentially pertinent details about the C30 gels:
The C30 Energy Gel Trial Pack comes with 8 gels: 3 caffeinated gels and 5 without caffeine. The 5 without caffeine include: Citrus, Passion Fruit, Berry, Fruit Punch and Orange. The caffeinated flavors include Berry + Caffeine, Cola + Caffeine, and Espresso + Caffeine.
Texture: I'd compare the Neversecond C30 gel texture to something in between the watery texture of Science in Sport Isotonic Gels and the slightly more viscous Untapped Energy Gel. It flows easily and you don't need a ton of water to wash it down. I tested a few of these gels in sub-freezing, East Coast temps, expecting to have to fight to get the gel down, but I was wrong. They flowed easily.
Flavor Notes + Rating (out of 10):
Moving forward, I'll purchase the Fruit Punch, Orange, and Citrus flavors. While I wasn't totally in love with the Berry + Caffeine flavor, I really enjoyed the formulation--75mg of caffeine treats me well.
Neversecond C30 gel packaging is designed to be easily carried and opened. While I like the size, shape, and durability of the packaging, I did run into some issues with opening one of the gels. The rip tab missed the perforation line and I couldn't get the gel contents to come out. This wasn't a big deal at the time of my training run, but during a race, this would be a big bummer.
The Neversecond C30 gel is a fantastic option for athletes who want a simple, straightforward fueling and hydration plan. Depending on your sweat sodium concentration and sweat rate, the C30 gel could be a dual purpose product. I personally see a lot of value in these gels for sub-ultra races where you don't want to stop at aid stations to fiddle with powders and refilling bottles.
I do wonder how these strong flavors like Fruit Punch would treat runners in an ultra-distance event where palate fatigue comes into play. I hear Neversecond has an unflavored formulation coming to market soon though...
