Best Half Tights for Running With Pockets: 4 Men’s Styles Tested

Why I Tested Men’s Running Half Tights With Pockets

When I started running about four years ago, getting out the door was simple: throw on a pair of shorts, lace up my running shoes and head out for a few miles. As I began training for longer distances and faster race paces, however, the amount of gear I carried started to grow. Suddenly, I needed somewhere to put my phone, gels, electrolytes, extra water and all the other odds and ends that come with longer runs.

I have used running belts and hydration vests for longer trail and road runs, but I wanted a simpler way to carry everything during training and races. I already owned two pairs of half tights that I wore frequently, but each had only two pockets—one for my phone and another that I stuffed full of gels. It worked, but it was far from ideal.

With a fall half marathon on my calendar, I set out to find the best half tights for running with enough storage to carry my fuel, hydration and phone comfortably. I tested four men’s half tights during easy runs, workouts and long runs, comparing their pocket capacity, accessibility, bounce, comfort and coverage. 🏃‍♂️ 🩳

The Best Half Tights for Running: Quick Picks

Each pair brought something different to the test, but the Path Projects Sentinel emerged as my overall favorite. If I had a race this weekend, it is the pair I would reach for. Still, another half tight may make more sense depending on whether you prioritize price, maximum storage or meticulous fuel organization.

🏆 Best Overall: Path Projects Sentinel Half Tight 🏆

The Sentinel combined the most comfortable fabric in the test with secure, race-ready storage. Its six-pocket layout gave me plenty of space for my phone and fuel without feeling bulky, while the brushed interior remained comfortable during long, sweaty runs.

💸 Best Value: Terignota Tahoma Half Tight 💸

The Tahoma delivered an impressive amount of functional storage at the lowest price in the test. Its deep leg pockets held both 350- and 500-milliliter soft flasks without bouncing, making it a strong option for runners who want to carry plenty without spending a small fortune on shorts.

👍 Best for Maximum Storage: Hikebeast Cargo Half Tight 👍

With eight pockets and the largest overall cargo capacity of the four, the Hikebeast stood out when I wanted to carry as much as possible. It securely held a 350-milliliter flask along with my phone, fuel and salt tabs, although its thicker compression may not appeal to every runner.

The Pike’s nine-pocket design provided the most ways to separate gels, gummies, salt tabs and empty wrappers. It is a particularly useful option for runners who want every item to have a designated place instead of piling everything into one large pocket.

Best Overall 🏆

Path Projects Sentinel Half Tight

The Sentinel earned my top spot because it was the most comfortable of the four, while its pockets kept my phone and fuel secure without bouncing. A 350-milliliter flask bounced in the lower side pocket, so I would choose this pair for carrying fuel and a phone rather than hydration.

Terignota Tahoma Half Tight

The Tahoma delivered the strongest value without sacrificing usable storage. Its deep leg pockets securely held both 350- and 500-milliliter flasks without bouncing, although the mesh half-liner shifted and required occasional adjustment during my runs.

Hikebeast Cargo Half Tight

The Hikebeast offered the most overall storage, including a hidden compartment that kept my phone separate from my fuel. It also carried a 350-milliliter flask without bouncing, but its wide leg cuffs felt tighter than those on the other half tights I tested.

For the Run Pike 9 Pocket Half Tight

The Pike stood out for its ability to separate gels, gummies, salt tabs and empty wrappers instead of piling everything into one cargo pocket. When fully loaded, however, the pockets bulged more than the others, and my phone became harder to reinsert when gels occupied the same pocket.

How I Tested These Men’s Running Half Tights

I like to say that I'm a dad that runs and a runner that dads! You can follow my running journey on Instagram @617_rnnr

Before diving into the details of my testing process, here's a little bit about me.

  • I’m a 36-year-old dad of two juggling family life and running.
  • I’m 5 feet, 7 inches tall, and weigh 170 pounds.
  • I currently run 30 to 35 miles per week while training for a half marathon.
  • I run mostly on pavement, with some light trails sprinkled in.

Testing Process 🥼
I tested a men's size medium in all four half tights and wore each pair for at least:

  • One easy run of 5 to 7 miles
  • One tempo or interval workout
  • One long run of at least 9 miles

To compare storage capacity, I loaded each pair with six gels, one package of energy gummies, two packets of salt tablets and my phone. I also tested 350- and 500-milliliter soft flasks when the pocket size allowed.

What I Looked For 👀

Throughout testing, I focused on four practical questions:

  1. Storage and security: Could the tights carry my phone, fuel, electrolytes and water without bouncing, sagging or pulling down the waistband?
  2. Access and organization: Could I reach my gear while running and keep different types of fuel—and sticky empty wrappers—separate?
  3. Long-run comfort: Did the tights remain comfortable during longer, sweatier runs without chafing or creating pressure points?
  4. Fit and coverage: Did the waistband and leg openings stay in place, and did the fabric provide enough coverage to wear confidently on its own?

🏆 Of the four half tights I tested, the Path Projects Sentinel delivered the best combination of comfort, secure storage and race-ready performance. Its brushed interior separated it from the other pairs before I even started loading the pockets.

Fit, Comfort and Coverage

I tested a size medium, and the fit was true to size. The brushed interior was the most comfortable against my skin of the four half tights I tested. I was initially concerned that the material might trap heat, but it wicked moisture well and stayed comfortable even when sweaty.

The substantial elastic waistband and elasticized leg openings kept the tights secure, even when the pockets were fully loaded. The double-ply crotch panel also provided extra coverage, and I did not have any issues with chafing.

Pocket Capacity and Access

The Sentinel has four main mesh-lined side pockets, each of which can hold multiple gels. Both lower pockets easily held my iPhone, and the zippered back pocket was also large enough for a phone.

During my full-capacity test, I carried six gels across the side pockets, energy gummies in the back pocket and my phone in another main pocket. Everything stayed secure without bouncing or causing any chafing. A lower side pocket could also hold a 350-milliliter flask, although the flask bounced more than I would want during a run.

The rear zippered pocket was a great option for securing my phone or other valuables. My only small critique was that I would have liked more dividers in the upper pockets to help organize individual gels.

The Bottom Line ⬇️

The Path Projects Sentinel is my best overall pick and the best option for premium comfort. Its brushed interior was the most comfortable I tested, and the mesh-lined pockets provided secure storage for my phone and fuel. If my race were this weekend, this is the pair I would wear.

Fit, Comfort and Coverage

I tested a size medium, and the fit was true to size. The nylon-and-elastane fabric felt soft against my skin and was thinner than the other half tights I tested, which was nice for warmer summer runs. The silicone grips around the leg openings kept the tights from moving, even deep into longer, sweatier runs.

The polyester mesh half-liner was comfortable and prevented chafing, but I had to adjust it a couple of times during my runs. I prefer a liner that is sewn in and stays in place without needing any attention.

Pocket Performance

The Tahoma had the deepest side pockets of any half tight I tested. Both a 350- and 500-milliliter flask fit securely without bouncing. I could also fit three gels into each of the hip pockets.

When I needed more room for fuel, I moved my phone to the envelope-style back pocket, which freed up another leg pocket. The pull tabs on the hip pockets were a great addition and made my gels easier to access while running.

I did not find the hip drawstring especially useful. It got in the way of the nearby pocket opening, and I have never had an issue with a traditional front drawstring causing chafing.

The Bottom Line ⬇️

The Tahoma is the best bang for your buck. It checked all the boxes I was looking for in a cargo half tight, including comfortable fabric, secure phone and fuel storage, and the ability to carry a soft flask without bouncing. At $33 at the time of testing, that is a crazy value.

Fit, Comfort and Coverage

I tested a size medium, and the fit was true to size. The fabric was thicker than the other half tights I tested, and the compression felt tighter. Even with the thicker material, the fabric was soft against my skin and remained comfortable during long, hot summer runs.

I chose the version without the optional modesty pad, but it still had a double-layered, sewn-in crotch area that provided extra coverage without causing any chafing. The wide, cycling-style leg cuffs felt a little tight, although they did not cause any issues during my runs.

Pocket Performance

The main leg pockets were the largest I tested and could hold a lot of gear. A 350-milliliter flask fit without bouncing, while a 500-milliliter flask had some bounce.

The hidden phone compartment inside the right cargo pocket was great for keeping my phone secure and separate from my gels and other fuel. The upper pockets came in two different sizes: The larger pocket could fit a phone, while the narrower pocket was perfect for individual gels. The rear zippered pocket also easily fit my phone and provided secure storage for other valuables.

Even when I fully loaded the pockets, the layout kept everything secure without bouncing. The mix of large cargo pockets and smaller hip pockets also made it easy to keep different types of fuel organized.

The Bottom Line ⬇️

The Hikebeast is the best option for maximum cargo capacity. These tights offered the most storage of any pair I tested. The main cargo pockets were wide and deep, while the hidden phone pocket preserved valuable space for gels and other fuel.

Fit, Comfort and Coverage

I tested a size medium, and the fit was true to size. The Tenzor fabric felt soft and comfortable against my skin, and the compression level felt about average compared with the other half tights.

I did not have any issues with chafing, even though the tights use a single layer of fabric. The leg openings felt snug but lacked some of the added elastic or grip features found on the other pairs. Even without those features, the tights stayed in place and provided bounce-free storage throughout my runs.

Pocket Performance

The two main leg pockets each use a 4-in-1 design, with smaller compartments for gels and deeper sections for larger items. The pockets performed well and made it easy to organize gels, gummies and other fuel.

Everything was easy to access, although I had some trouble getting my phone back into the pocket when it was also filled with four gels. When the tights were fully loaded with my phone and fuel, the pockets also started to bulge more than those on the other pairs I tested.

With so many pockets, I always seemed to have an empty one available for used gel wrappers, which helped keep my hands from getting sticky. I would have liked the rear zippered pocket to be larger, though, because it was too small to fit my phone comfortably.

The Bottom Line ⬇️

The Pike is the best option for organization. Its 4-in-1 leg pockets allowed me to give individual gels their own space while still leaving room for my phone, other types of fuel and empty wrappers.

Final Verdict: The Path Projects Sentinel Was My Top Pick

All four of these cargo half tights offered great bounce-free storage for gels, energy gummies, my phone and more. I will definitely keep all of them in my training rotation leading up to my half marathon. But if my race were this weekend, I’d be grabbing the Path Projects Sentinel.

The Sentinel was the most comfortable half tight I tested. The brushed interior and elasticized leg openings kept me chafe-free, while the pocket layout provided bounce-free storage for the gels, gummies, extra electrolytes and phone I plan to carry during my race.

The other three pairs still have situations where I would choose them. The Terignota Tahoma is hard to beat for the price and did the best job carrying a soft flask without bouncing. The Hikebeast offers the most overall cargo capacity, while the For the Run Pike provides the best organization for separating fuel and empty wrappers.

All four earned a place in my training rotation, but the Path Projects Sentinel is my race-day pick.

Disclosure: I purchased the Terignota Tahoma Half Tight with my own money. Hikebeast and For the Run provided their half tights for review, and WeeViews purchased the Path Projects Sentinel Half Tight for this comparison.
