When former Salomon employees Nicolas Mermoud and Jean-Luc Diard joined forces to develop Hoka's first max-cushioned running shoe in 2009, the running industry was obsessed with minimalist shoes.

Beginning as a tiny shop in 1981, Second Sole has grown to eight different locations across Ohio. All of their stores offer a gait analysis along with an injury history consultation in order to provide the best fit for each runner.
Stop by the Akron location and chances are good that you'll be fitted for shoes by a winner of the Akron Marathon, Half Marathon or 8k. Nick Stricklen currently holds the honor of the 2021 Marathon with a time of 2:25:07. Aiman Scullion took both the 8k and Half Marathon titles in 2018.
Q: What kinds of interesting runners have you met in your line of business?
Aiman: We see a wide range of runners that come into the shop. Itโs fun because we are able to connect with and help runners who are just beginning as well as elite and world class runners.
Q: Why do you love working in the running industry?
Aiman: I enjoy the camaraderie that comes about from the miles you end up sharing with friends or new runners from the community.
Q: What is your favorite local running group or groups to join up with to run?
Aiman: My favorite local running group would have to be Portage Lakes Running Club. They provide runners with an overwhelming amount of support and also seem to always have a great time!
Q: What is your own personal run or running event that is most memorable?
Aiman: One of my most memorable running events is my high school cross country camp. Iโll never forget how hard we trained and how much fun I had with my teammates.
Q: What kinds of running events or groups do you help to put on or promote through Second Sole?
Aiman: We do all types of events! Our next event on the calendar will be a clean up here in the Valley to kick off Spring. We do our best to gather the running community and clean up trash from a lot of the areas we use to hike, walk, and run. We also collect items for raffle and sell baked goods on this day to raise money for Girls On The Run.
