Qiaodan Wind 4 Pro Review

Qiaodan Wind 4 Pro Review

I wanted to review the pairing of the Wind model of shoes by Qiaodan. The standard Wind 4 is posted and this is the Pro version, which is a carbon plated runner in the likes of the Puma Deviate Nitro series.

Review Goal

Deets and Usage

Weight: My size 12's came in weighing: Left 10.1 Ounces, Right 10.0 Ounces
Extrapolated sample size 9: Roughly 8.4 ounces
Heel Stack: Stats that I can find say this is around 35mm in the heel.  From 50 miles of running, I think that is actually fairly accurate
Drop: Stats that I can find say 7mm, which feels accurate from my runs
Upper:  Q-SILK PRO Leno Elastic Jacquard Mesh
Outsole:  Full-Sole Marathon-Grade CPU Wear-Resistant Rubber

Midsole: Dual-Layer Dual-Supercritical Foam (Top Layer Q-PRO Supercritical Foam + Bottom Layer Ultra-Light Supportive Foam).  I believe the base layer is an EVA and the upper is a Peba based, but can't confirm.
Plate: Full-Length Isomeric Flying-Wing T400 Carbon Plate

MSRP: I paid $89.02, which is basically 20 dollars less than what I paid for the base model.  This is the experience of Aliexpress, it's like playing in the stock market in that the prices can go up and down, sometimes you hit at the right time.  Even if you hit at the higher time, you are still likely to pay less than on the western market.  Right now this shoe is running around $120, but I have seen it between $100 and $110 recently.

Use cases:
I ran a total of 50 miles in this pair.  I ran on concrete, tarmac, track and some light trail in dry conditions.  I ran on concrete in wet conditions for a 10K distance.  I ran easy pace, steady pace and up tempo runs. My long run in this shoe was around 11 miles.

Upper

Qiaodan Wind 4 Pro Review
Found a lil gator friend

Laces: These laces are a ribbed strong lace, which I much prefer over the laces of the base pair.  These are actually some of the better laces on a shoe I have encountered.
Tongue: The tongue is lightly padded with a lace loop and no gusset.  It is a race shoe type of tongue, but I would prefer a gusset on this type of set up.  With that said, I had no issues on the run after getting it set up.
Upper material: I really dig the visual design of the shoe and the upper is improved over the base model.  It is a little more flexible than the base model, but still bunches with a lower volume foot.  A higher volume foot may be just fine.
Heel: The heel has minimal structure and the collar is minimally but nicely padded.  The collar is a minimal design, more towards a racing upper design.  I had no heel slippage in this design, but I never quite felt fully locked down either.  The shoes run a bit long in the toe box and I just never felt fully secured, but never had any slippage either.
Toe Room: Width was fine, but the toe runs a little long.  Not long enough to size up, but just a little extra.
Fit: I would consider the fit true to size, but the volume of your foot is going to change the way you feel in this shoe for sure.

The upper on the Pro version is a clear upgrade from the base Wind model.

Outsole

This is an excellent outsole.  Great traction on wet and dry conditions.  Thicker layer of a higher grade outsole from the base model that has no signs of wear after 50 miles.

I ran a 10k run in fairly consistent rain on wet concrete and it handled great.  I love the design features/colors of it as well being matched to the uppers.

From my experience, this outsole is going to have above average durability.

Midsole

The midsole is a bit of a confusing experience for me.  Not having run in a lot of carbon plated shoes, I was expecting a certain pop with a higher level foam combo with the plate.  I don't really get that experience underfoot with this shoe and my mechanics.

And I think that is where to take this part of the review.  I have a longer stride, slower cadence type of running cycle.  When I run more like my natural way of running, the shoe is a bit clunky to me and I don't get much out of it.  However, when I shorted my stride and pick up the cadence, this shoe becomes very smooth and very very efficient.  On one of my longer runs I was purposely trying to change up where I was landing and my cadence to find a pocket where I fit with the shoe and it is is mid to forefoot strike with a higher cadence.   My natural stride is mid to heel strike with slower cadence.

A shoe I think is a great comparison is the Puma Deviate Nitro 4.  I have done some runs in that shoe and simply haven't gotten much out of them.  It has confused me a bit because that is a very popular trainer that gets a lot of kudos, but it just never does much for me.  (Version 3 same issue).  I think this shoe has helped me figure that out, because the specs on the shoes are very similar to that shoe.  If you are a fan of the Puma Deviate Nitro series at $170 bucks, you might want to give this shoe a chance at under $120 bucks.

So for me, this is probably not a shoe I will turn to much as it doesn't fit my mechanics the best, but that is not the shoes fault.  I hope Qiaodan updates the base model with this type of upper and outsole and they are greatly improved and the prices are almost the same, plus I got along with that midsole more.

But......back to the efficiency note.  When I would find the pocket of a quicker cadence and settle into that, I would not notice my pace until I looked down a couple of times and found I was going much quicker than I felt.  So, again, if you are a faster cadence type of runner this shoe may be a great match for you because I hit some very nice paces without feeling like I was "working for it" and my legs felt great.

One additional note: I did originally get a bit of heel pain on my first run in the shoe, so I pulled back a bit on my long runs.  With that said, I did not have a repeat of that issue and my heel was fine after the 11 mile run.  So, this may or may not have had anything to do with the shoe or maybe the plate just needed to loosen a bit, but I wanted to make sure to note that.  FYI, I also have issues with plated/unflexible shoes at times.

Final thoughts

This shoe has top shelf level outsole, a very nice midsole that seems to be geared towards higher cadence runners, an improved upper from the base model that still has a little sloppiness to it with a very nice design.

I wouldn't have problems recommending this shoe because the quality is high and for the right runner, it will perform well.  However, this is where understanding your own mechanics, likes/dislikes come in handy.  I'm still learning that myself, but I believe this shoe helped me understand why my feedback loop on the Deviate Nitro is always different from other runners.

So if you like shoes like the Deviate Nitro, give this shoe a chance as it is truly a value proposition on that type of shoe and I think it is a pretty sweet looking shoe.
