As a mid-pack runner who loves tackling 25K–50K distances, I recently gave the Neversecond C30 Energy Gel Trial Pack a shot during two long runs. I’ve used five of the eight gels so far, and as someone who doesn’t often rely on gels—usually grabbing a bag of candy from a gas station or snagging one at an aid station—I was curious how these would hold up for self-supported fueling.
First off, the flavors are a win. Berry and Fruit Punch stole the show for me, though the Cola (caffeinated) was a close contender—especially since I don’t usually do caffeine day-to-day, so that kick was noticeable and welcome. Taste-wise, they’re enjoyable without being overpowering, which is clutch when you’re miles deep into a run.
The consistency is where these gels shine for me. It’s my favorite of any gel I’ve tried (GU, Maurten, Huma, other niche brands I don't recall). They’re thin and smooth—no need to chase them with water, and no sticky residue lingering in the corners of your mouth. For someone like me who’s used to candy or the occasional aid-station gel, this was a game-changer. They also have sat well in my stomach thus far—no GI grumbles, even on runs pushing past a couple hours.
Energy-wise, they deliver. The C30s gave me a quick boost, and the caffeinated Cola option was a standout for that late-run pick-me-up I usually save for the final stretch of a race or run. The caffeine hit just right without overwhelming me, which I appreciated given my low baseline tolerance.
Packaging gets a solid nod too. I’d read some folks struggled with the tear tab ripping too far vertically, but I didn’t have that issue—opened all five cleanly, even on the move. The durable packets held up in my pack without me worrying about a gel explosion. The larger volume and thinner consistency mean they’re a bit bulkier than some gels, but carrying three or four for a long run wasn't noticeable in my pack. I wouldn’t stockpile them for a full-day ultra, but that’s not my use case anyway.
Compared to other gels I've tried, Neversecond’s C30s take the crown for me, mostly thanks to that thinner consistency. The C30s strike a balance of effective fueling (quick energy, decent sodium) and practicality that I haven’t found elsewhere. For some extra electrolytes, I always carry SaltStick FastChews for any long effort as cramping can be an issue for me.
I’m sold on using the C30s for my upcoming 50K at Canyons by UTMB, where I’m chasing a new PR. I’d recommend them to any endurance athlete—runners, cyclists, whoever—who needs reliable, stomach-friendly fuel. If you’re tired of wrestling with sticky gels or want something that doesn’t demand a water chaser, give these a try. For me, they’ve earned a spot in my pack.
I received the C30 Trial Pack free from Neversecond.
