I was curious to try out the Brooks Ghost Max 2. The first version of the Ghost Max was okay, but it didn’t feel like Brooks had gone all-in on it. It shared some similarities with the Ghost, just heavier and bulkier. This year's model feels like an even bigger shift, and I actually think the Ghost Max 2 is even bulkier for running. It's not awful, but running in the Ghost Max now feels like running with cinderblocks on your feet.
The Ghost Max 2 offers a cushioned and orthotic-friendly shoe. However, this year’s version is heavier and stiffer. In my opinion, Brooks missed the mark on this being a running shoe. If they intend for it to transition into something else like a walking and standing shoe, that’s fine, but it’s definitely bulkier and less nimble than before. And believe me, I love a good bulky and well cushioned running shoe, but the Brooks Ghost Max 2 doesn't even feel like that. Before I begin, the Brooks Ghost Max 2 is not a bad shoe, but I do think it should be marketed for walking or standing.
The upper of the Ghost Max 2 is made from breathable engineered mesh, giving it decent airflow, even on warm days. The mesh feels a bit thicker than many other brands, but it's not thick enough to prohibit air flow.
The fit runs a bit short, so most people might want to size up by half, especially if you use orthotics. The toebox has a lot of space and will be appreciated by those with wider feet, though some might be put off by the shorter overall length. It's surprising because typically Brooks fits true to size.
The best shoe uppers are ones you forget you’re wearing once you’ve got the right size. The Ghost Max 2 achieves that, although it just might be a different size than you're used too. The midfoot provides a snug fit, and the slightly padded tongue stays put even though it’s not gusseted.
The plush heel collar offers comfort for extended periods of standing or walking, but the heel is a bit wide, which may lead to slippage. You can always lace your shoes to the back eyelit to prevent slipping.
As someone who typically wears a women's size 10–11 wide, I found the size 11 to be the best fit for me in this model. If you’re planning to wear orthotics, you might need to size up even more. You might wear a bigger size than ever before and that's fine. The Brooks Ghost Max 2 just runs short.
The Ghost Max 2 uses Brooks' DNA Loft v3 foam, which delivers a firmer ride compared to the previous model. I expected a soft, pillowy more cushioned version of the Brooks Ghost. What we get is a firmer version which feels a bit clunky and heavy.
The stack height offers solid cushioning, but there’s definitely a firmer feel, especially during longer walks or slower runs. The added stiffness in the midfoot and forefoot provides good stability, which will appeal to runners with low arches or those in need of more support. On the downside, the firmness takes away from the shoe’s responsiveness, making it less suitable for speedier runs. I have to wonder if eventually this shoe will take the place of the Brooks Dyad.
Or maybe it already has? It's not a bad thing, but if that is the case I hope it gets marketed to more walkers and runners.
Where does the Ghost Max 2 fit into my rotation? It’s best suited for slower, easy-paced runs. I prefer it for that, as it’s harder to get into a faster stride with this shoe. I’ll also use it occasionally for walking or standing, as that’s where the Ghost Max 2 really shines.
Brooks is known for making durable shoes, and the Ghost Max 2 doesn’t disappoint in that department. The outsole is designed with durable rubber, making it ideal for long miles on roads or gentle trails. I’ve taken it on easy trails and even on wet days, and the shoe has held up well.
When it comes to durability, I’d expect around 300 miles out of the Ghost Max 2. If it’s primarily used for standing or walking, the mileage might be slightly less, but it’s built to last.
The Brooks Ghost Max 2 is a good choice for those seeking a shoe for walking, standing, or easy running, especially if you use orthotics. Its firmer midsole and supportive design cater well to individuals needing extra structure. That said, I preferred the original Ghost Max for running purposes. I want to clarify, the Brooks Ghost Max 2 is not a bad shoe. But I do believe it's best suited for walking and standing.
