ASICS Novablast 4 Review

The buzz around the Novablast, with its significant fan base, intrigued me. I've run in previous versions but they've never been "my favorite," or the shoe I love the most. I've honestly just been a big fan of the ASICS Superblast, which has more cushion (and is more expensive). The Novablast has quite the fan base, and it was enough for me to be interested.

Quick ASICS Novablast 4 Facts

  • Price: $139.95
  • Weight: 9.1 oz
  • Heel to Toe Drop: 8 mm
  • Type of Shoe: Daily trainer

This model stands out as a lightweight, well-cushioned daily trainer, quickly climbing the ranks to rival the ASICS Nimbus in popularity. ASICS was once known for their gel base and heavy shoes, but these days, ASICS has branched out to make lighter and faster shoes too.
ASICS Novablast Intro

The Novablast 4 shines as a daily trainer, offering a more spacious toe box compared to other ASICS models. It's not wide per se, but it's relatively wider than most ASICS shoes, with significant updates enhancing its fit. The burning question remains: Does the Novablast 4 live up to the high bar set by previous versions?

ASICS Novablast 4 Upper and Fit:

The Novablast 4 introduces a redesigned upper, aligning more closely with the fit of the Superblast. It's no secret I'm a huge fan of the Superblast, so making the Novablast 4 closer to that is fine by me.

This iteration is noticeably wider, featuring a gusseted winged tongue for stable positioning. ASICS has cut out a large portion of their fan base just based on too narrow shoes, so it's nice to see some wider lasts. Now, this is not "wide," so if you need a wide shoe, this isn't it, but it's wider than average.

The updated upper transforms the fit, making it more inclusive for varying foot widths. The best running shoe uppers will disappear off your feet, and the ASICS Novablast 4 does just that. There are no hot spots or places where I've developed blisters or bunions.

In running shoes, I usually wear between a women's size 10-11 wide. I found the ASICS Novablast 4 to fit best in size 11.

ASICS Noveblast 4 Midsole:

The midsole employs ASICS' Flightfoam Blast+ Eco, incorporating 20% recycled materials, leading to a 23% smaller carbon footprint than the industry average. While I support the use of sustainable materials, they often result in a firmer ride. I'm all about running shoes that are good for the environment, but I also want a comfortable ride.

The Novablast 4 is firm, yet not uncomfortably so. It's versatile enough to suit various runs, making it an excellent choice for days when the run type is undecided. While there may be better shoes for speedwork, the Novablast 4 excels as a multifaceted daily trainer. ASICS mentioned this is the softest version of the Novablast yet, and I see it. It's definitely softer than previous versions.

Where does the ASICS Novablast 4 fit into my rotation? I figured it would be a daily trainer, and that's exactly what it is. I prefer it for those runs when you're just getting out the door. It can handle faster speeds, but I prefer something faster for workouts and races. I'll usually just use the Superblast for longer runs or easier runs. But the ASICS Novablast 4 makes for a good daily trainer, and we need those!

Outsole:

Transitioning to an AHAR Lo outsole, similar to the Superblast, the Novablast 4 offers better traction than previous versions. ASICS has always been well-known for durability, and the Novablast 4 is no exception. I've now used it for over 200 miles and it shows no signs of slowing down. I predict it will last above 400 miles.

As for inclement conditions, I've used the ASICS Novablast 4 on sandy trails as well as in rainy conditions with no issues of sliding around. They aren't a "trail shoe," but there is plenty of cushion so you don't need to worry if you're running on dirt.

Conclusion:

The ASICS Novablast 4 stands out as a top contender for daily training footwear. Its widespread acclaim and loyal following are well-deserved, given its ability to cater to a wide variety of runner needs. The Novablast 4 offers a blend of lightweight responsiveness while still providing plenty of cushion for daily and longer runs. In all, maybe I was wrong about the first few versions of the Novablast, because this one is good!

Who should buy the ASICS Novablast 4? Those looking for a wider ASICS shoe or a daily trainer that is responsive but still has cushion.

Who should not buy the ASICS Novablast 4? I don't really have a reason not to buy it. If you're looking for a shoe with more cushion or a speedwork shoe, there are better options.
