As an experienced runner who has never worn carbon-plated shoes, I was eager to find a pair for my summer training cycle. I tried on a few of the more popular super shoes and I personally thought that they felt too lightweight and unstable for me. I started to do some digging online and I found that many people thought the Saucony Endorphin Pro was a great shoe for carbon-plated beginners. As a runner with a closet full of Saucony shoes, I had to try them. When I first tried them on, I was relieved at the familiar feel of a Saucony shoe. They felt supportive, comfortable, and it felt like my foot fit perfectly into the shoe. When I took them out for a spin, I felt the energy and spring of the shoe, and finished the run feeling just as good as when I started. I got these shoes to run the NYC Marathon. I was not planning on a PR at the race, so I was nervous I wouldn't get the same results as when I tested them during a speed workout. However, there are many people who agree that this shoe is great for slower paced runners and believe that you can still get results from them while running slower. I couldn't wait to try them out in a race setting!
Lacing up these shoes in the starting tent gave me confidence. Here's why:
-I am obsessed with the upper of these shoes. It is thin, yet padded and big enough to prevent lace bite. Many race day shoes are made of such thin materials to keep them light, you are guaranteed some discomfort, but not these!
-The overall fit is so perfect, I never had heel slip or slid forward in the shoe (which is saying something because they are definitely rockers!)
-Some say the heel cup is restrictive, but if you have narrow ankles like me, it will feel perfect.
During the race:
-While I was running slower than usual, I still felt the energy of the shoe. The rocker design kept me moving forward, even when other parts of me wanted to stop. The shoe encouraged me to stay running, and prevented me from walking.
-I had no discomfort from the lightweight material of the shoes.
-They kept my gait consistent, striking midsole or on my toes uphill.
-They were not very stable on the roads of NY. While on a track, I felt stability, on the roads of NYC (potholes, sewer caps, road damage every where), they did not leave me feeling stable and I felt like I had to watch my feet more than I would have liked.
After the race:
-I think a lot can be said about a shoe that you don't feel like ripping off your feet immediately after the race! I had no desire to take them off, and I walked all around NYC after the race, still in the shoe.
-I believe I recovered faster because of these shoes. They were efficient, fast, and helped me get the job done!
-I had no blisters after the race, which was surprising because I had not put many miles on them yet.
Overall, I think if you are looking for your first carbon plated race-day shoe, this is a great beginner option. They are comfortable, stable (NYC roads are the exception!), and so energetic. They made an every day runner (me), feel like a pro! The only race I wouldn't wear these, is for a rainy race, as they are mesh and have cut-outs on the upper, which would definitely cause a sponge effect. After the race, they still feel like they have more life in them, so I am excited to keep wearing these speedy shoes!
Thank you WeeViews for helping me purchase these shoes for the NYC Marathon!
