The Four Bridges Half Marathon which is one of the older races in Chattanooga has one of the simplest courses and even Chattanooga residents can't truly run all of the roads that you can in the race as a part of it is on the interstate and if you run the full version of this race (seven bridges marathon) you also run over a major dam which has significant traffic with no sidewalks. Despite that, the course is pretty simple and extremely flat, especially for Chattanooga, which typically has a lot of hillier terrain.
There are some gorgeous views of the Tennessee River on the course as you quickly get to three out of the four bridges and conclude with a bridge that is exclusively a pedestrian bridge even during non-race times. While there are nice views throughout Chattanooga, you don't see much of the city. If that's your purpose for wanting to do a half marathon, the Chattanooga Marathon would also be a good option, a race that I've already reviewed. Since half the race is on a Riverwalk there are a good number of public restrooms available for use during the race and in addition to your traditional race day foods they also offer up oranges and bananas for the run.
The downsides? If you race for a lot of the hoopla that occurs during the race such as bands, swag and things like that you won't find much and when you cross the finish line while they do have the normal hydration and snacks like you would at most races you may get an unusual post-race snack, but it was still good Oatmeal - from a company called the Oatmeal experience and you get your choice of blueberry or strawberry.
