ASICS Superblast Review

The ASICS Superblast is a new shoe for 2023. It's a maximalist trainer without a carbon plate. At $200, it's not cheap, but you can't go wrong with the soft and springy cushion amount. Full disclosure: I've run through 3 pairs and am on my fourth pair. I didn't think I would *ever* have a day when my favorite trainer is an ASICS shoe. What makes the Superblast different compared to other "super trainers" is that it's so darn light!

The Superblast is the first shoe from ASICS above that 40 mm stack height line. That 40 mm stack height makes shoes legal or not legal to win races. For most runners, racing in a 40 mm stack height isn't the best fit because it's bulkier and more cumbersome than traditional trainers anyway. Really the Superblast is the first maximalist shoe that doesn't feel like a tank. So why train in a maximalist trainer? Training in a 40 mm stack height allows a runner to have more cushion and even a little bit more propulsion. But is the ASICS Superblast worth the $200? That makes it one of the most expensive daily trainers without a carbon plate.

Weight: 8.4 oz

Heel Toe Drop: 8 mm

Price: $200

ASICS Superblast Sole:

With the 45.5 mm stack height, I assumed the Superblast would be super soft. Like a marshmallow! But it's not at all, and maybe that is what makes it so unique in the running world. The has a firmer and more engaging ride. It transitions smoothly from heel to toe.

The Superblast midsole mainly comprises the signature ASICS FF Turbo Foam. This is why it doesn't compress much and has no soft "squish."  It also doesn't flex or bend easily. This is also why ASICS decided not to include a plate; the Superblast is rigid enough. Adding a plate would make it so rigid that runners would probably stay away.

Unlike other maximalist, high-stack height trainers, the Superblast can be used for almost any type of run. It's not so soft that it's hard to pick up the pace, but it has so much cushion you can use it as an easy run shoe. I've found that it is my favorite shoe for daily runs and long runs. If I'm looking for a speed shoe, I generally go towards something with a carbon plate, but I'm not afraid to pick up the pace if needed with the ASICS Superblast. Weight shouldn't be a big deal, but it will effect how you feel in a shoe. The Superblast is the lightest of any maximal cushioned trainer.

The ASICS Superblast falls as my daily run or long run shoe. If I want a super easy run shoe, I'll generally choose the ASICS Nimbus, and for faster workouts, I'll pick something with a carbon plate. The ASICS Superblast is a great multipurpose trainer and one of the best in that category.

Durability and Traction:

ASICS is known for its high durability in its trainers, and the ASICS Superblast is no different. The Superblast uses the AHARPLUS rubber found is so many ASICS models. This rubber makes for a very durable shoe that can be used in almost any condition. It is "scary" to spend $200 on a regular ole' trainer, but I've found the Superblast to last at least 400 miles thanks to all of that cushion and AHARPLUS rubber..

Regarding traction, I've taken the Superblast out in inclement weather and on sandy trails with no issues sliding around. You don't have to worry about that.

ASICS Superblast Upper:

The upper of the ASICS Superblast is similar to the Metaspeed+ Series from ASICS but with more volume and room. The Metaspeed+ series of shoes would be nearly perfect if they gave you more space in the toe box. But alas, the narrow toebox makes it almost impossible to cram your foot in. And even if you do, you'll likely lose a toenail if you run any race downhill. Anyway, I digress. Unlike the Metapssed+ series, the Superblast uses a jacquard mesh upper, making the mesh much softer. This means it doesn't beat up your feet like the racing shoes. I personally find it to be the best upper ASICS has created.

The ASICS Superblast tongue is semi-guessed and flat. ASICS claims it has a "winged tongue dozen" to prevent movement. I haven't had any issues with the language irritating my foot, although occasionally, it will move around while running. The heel tab and collar have some padding that keeps your heel locked.

Before purchasing the ASICS Superblast, I read several reviews that said, "You need to size down," but honestly, I don't find that the case, and I'm glad I kept with my regular size. I typically wear between a woman's size 10-11 in running shoes and found the size 11 in the ASICS Superblast to fit perfectly. It helps that ASICS uses unisex sizing in the Superlbast so I have found the Superblast to be slightly wider than most ASICS models (hoorah, maybe all ASICS shoes should use unisex sizing).

Overall, the ASICS Superblast fits better than almost any other ASICS shoe. If you have wide feet and have *wanted* to try an ASICS shoe, the Superblast might be the one for you!

ASICS Superblast Conclusion:

The ASICS Superblast is excellent for those who want a light and cushioned trainer/racer without a plate. I'll continue to use the ASICS Superblast, and I think it's worth the $200. I'm curious if the next version will be more bouncy and responsive.

Who should buy the ASICS Superblast?
If you are someone who wants more cushion in their running shoes, you won't find much more than the Superblast. It can be used as almost anything from daily trainer to racer. *One thing to keep in mind is because the stack height is higher than legally allowed, you cannot race in it if you plan to win a race.* Technically, you can get disqualified. Most runners are competing in WADA-sanctioned events, but it is something to be mindful of.

Who should not buy the ASICS Superblast?

If you are looking for a racer with a carbon plate or if you plan to win races.
