This past year has been a journey in terms of nailing my own fueling and hydration for ultra endurance events. I'm still nowhere near having a perfect nutrition plan, but I'm SO much closer than where I was. As a sports nutrition coach, I am always creating plans for clients, but I sometimes neglect my own!
Huma Plus has really changed the game for me. Initially I thought I wasn't fueling with enough carbohydrate during my long runs, but now it seems that the addition of more electrolytes was the real issue. I love the simplicity of Huma gel. From their short ingredient list to the convenient packaging, these are my new favorites for hot summer days.
If you are a salty sweater, live in a hot/humid climate, or notice unexplained fatigue midrun, consider adding Huma Plus to your nutrition plan! I've been running hard workouts in 80-90 degree weather and haven't experienced any GI distress using these gels with adequate water intake.
I've always struggled with Gu gels and other similar products. Their consistency, flavor, and ingredients are SO off-putting over the course of a few hours. Not only that, I always seem to come away from a session with a brick in my gut...or worse. Huma gel has yet to fail me even in the hottest conditions so far this summer.
Plus, the flavors are tasty! My favorites are the lemon/lime and the raspberry lemonade--which also happen to be Huma's caffeinated options (coincidence?). The high salt content compliments them nicely whereas the other flavors I've tried (blackberry/banana and berries/pomegranate) get a bit overpowered by the salt. I actually like the saltiness as it encourages me to drink more plain water with each gel!
Each pouch contains:
While sweat ratios vary from runner to runner, what I've read suggests that the average person sweats a salt ratio of 220 Sodium to 63 Potassium to 16 Calcium to 8 Magnesium, so this product overshoots just slightly.
For $33 on Amazon, you can purchase a variety pack of Huma Plus (12 pouches of 100kcal each), equating to approximately $2.75 per pouch! Compare that to Spring Energy that runs roughly $4-$5 per 100-120kcal pouch.
On the Huma website, you can purchase a 24 pack of single flavors for $66
