Summary

Outstanding shoe, with some major design flaws. Right from the beginning requires the wearing of moleskin or something else to protect from blisters. The foam in the carbon plate are great, wish we could give it a better score.

New Balance FuelCell SuperComp Trainer Review

For those that are following my other reviews (Hoka Rocket X2s), This is the shoe my wife chose because She didn't like losing the races to me.  In the store the performance was amazing.  Nice and squishy, has the carbon plate springiness, and looks good too. Unfortunately, there's a few design flaws that I'll delve into.

Positives: overall performance

20 miles of break in.

Just breaking in these shoes, the performance of solid.  Good for the long run training until about mile 5. (Will get to that in a few minutes). The tread wear is about 20-ish miles, can see from the picture. Not too bad at all.  Considering both my wife and I run heavy footed, she estimates she'll get 400 miles of this if she can tolerate them.

The negatives: poorly stitched upper.

This piece on the tongue cuts into her foot.
You can see that the extra fabric is as thick as a penny.

The fabric that goes along the back of the heel, normally both like because it allows the shoes interiors to last a little bit longer, is stitched so heavily along the top part of the upper that it digs into your foot after a couple of miles.  Even with moleskine applied to the top of her foot, It did rip in and cause more blisters and tearing.

Note: we will update this review after more miles.

Michael Vaughan Update: after 100 miles, these are great shoes. Maybe we bump them to 4 stars, but 100 miles is a long break in!
