This is hands down the best race I have ever done, and I plan to continue each year. That being said, it is easily the most difficult race I have done. There are many stressors - lack of oxygen is one. The race ends at the summit of Pikes Peak, a 14er and has over 7,000 feet of elevation gain. If you live at sea level you should throw altitude training in leading up to this. There were a number of people turning around from elevation sickness. Also, you need to keep track of your wave and the time between checkpoints. There are no vehicles in the middle of the race to return people to the race start when you are in the mountain. There is only emergency airlift. Upon finishing you can shuttle or take the railway cog down the mountain, but if you do not hit the checkpoints in time you are required to turn around and head downhill on the mountain.
Beginning at mile 2 is Barr Trail. Be aware that there is a lot of bottlenecking here if you are in the last half of start waves. It’s difficult to move ahead here because this so calculate this in with your pace.
Abigail Lock This race is on my bucket list!
