This was an amazing race. As it was my first Marathon I was excited and nervous. The course has changed a little since 2017 but the best parts are still there. As you start in Downtown Detroit the two main attractions are the run across the Ambassador Bridge connecting Detroit to Windsor Canada. You then run in Canada for a few miles before you descend into the tunnel that takes you under the Detroit River and back into the United States. Since this does cross International boundaries, you will need a passport or in Michigan an Enhanced Driver's License. Technically, this can cause potential slowdowns. The border patrol could ask to search you, especially if you have a vest on. When I ran it, I did not see anyone getting stopped.
What you don't realize is how high the bridge is, the incline it takes to get to the bridge, and how hot the tunnel can be.
You then run the rest of the Marathon in the streets of Detroit. There are also two half-marathons offered, one is an international that completes the first half of the Marathon or a US-only half that does the second half.
It took me a long time to finish, but I loved every second of it.
This was an amazing race that crosses International borders. With a once largest in the world bridge to a tunnel under the Detroit river. Although Chicago, New York, and Boston get all the credit for top-tier Marathons, Detroit is a race any runner should do.
