Summary

The Bubble Run is a fun morning for families.  Kids love the bubbles and the medals.  But don't expect a real race experience.

Pros
  • The bubble cannon at the after-party is the best part
  • Great for families
  • Great price
Cons
  • Parking is expensive - $20, cash only
  • Not a real 5k - my apps said 1.8 miles
  • Course isn't all paved - much of it goes through fields and a dirt track
  • Overcrowded

Columbus Bubble Run

I signed myself and my daughter up for this race because it was "free" - and it looked like fun.  And, to be fair, my daughter and her friend had a blast.  But this isn't the typical race - it's definitely just for fun.

When I showed up for packet pickup, I knew that I was in for something different.  It was quick but somewhat chaotic.  I had email codes for everyone on my team, but none were checked.  I was just given a stack of packages.

On race day, parking was just as chaotic (and also expensive!).  There were so many people that the line for the start wrapped around several times.  Everyone looked excited to be there - and many had costumes - so the vibe was definitely fun.  But there were sooooo many people!  They started the race in groups, but it didn't really matter.  There were no chips for keeping track of times, and the course was a free-for-all.  Lots of strollers and small kids.  Some people were barely even walking, which tended to stress me out because I like to keep moving.  And the course was over dirt paths and through fields.  I definitely wouldn't recommend trying to run - because I almost twisted my ankle a few times just walking the course.  Still, the kids had fun.  They loved the atmosphere and the colorful bubble stations.  They loved getting a medal at the end.  But the bubble cannon in the end was definitely the best part.  So many bubbles!

If you're looking for a serious race, then, this definitely isn't it.  But if you go in just looking to wander around and have some fun with the kids, at least the kids will have a fun morning.  Just be sure to wear old shoes - and don't expect a PR.

Experience

This was my first Bubble Run, but I've done multiple other races of different distances.

Amanda Adams We were doing the jax event 10.1 but it was changed to 10.8. Haven't had good luck with refund due to other race on 10.8. Did terrain race (same Active company is sponsor) it was horrible. Poorly constructed, poorly ran. Will never do another active event again

Kristin Kramer I agree. It wasn't well run at all. I keep getting emails for next year's, and I haven't completely ruled it out - but only because my daughter and her friend had so much fun. If it was just for me, there's no way I'd do it again.
