I have been excited about this one since seeing it on videos out of TRE (The Running Event) and it has been hard to come by since it was released due to demand. Finally found a pair available in my size. After 82 miles, was it worth the excitement?

Topo Athletic Specter 3, 82 mile review Review

Review Goal: A shoe I was looking at as a tool for long distance fartlek type of training runs and potential marathon usage.  Also if it was versatile enough to use for daily training miles.

Deets and Usage

Weight: My size 12's came in weighing: Left 8.7 Ounces, Right 9.0 Ounces
Sample size 9: 6.7 Ounces
Heel Stack: 40mm
Drop: 5mm drop
Upper: Recycled engineered mesh ensures airy breathability, a secure midfoot and heel lockdown, and a naturally roomy toe box for a strong and stable base.
Outsole: Proprietary rubber forms a thick layer of generous coverage for enhanced longevity, inherent stability, and responsive toe-offs

Midsole:

  • RevFoam is ATPU-based superfoam that's soft, lightweight, and highly responsive.
  • ATPU sockliner adds premium bounce and step-in comfort over standard insoles.
  • Updated aggressive rocker shape has an earlier starting point for higher efficiency and faster transitions.

MSRP: $170
Plate: No

Use cases:
I have 82 miles of running in the shoes with another few miles of walking.  Not really meant for walking, but wore it to the office to see how it felt underfoot.  Ran in wet conditions on concrete and tarmac.  Ran in dry conditions on light trail, concrete and tarmac.  I did 2 runs of 10 plus miles including a 13.5 mile run.   I did daily type of miles, up tempo and fartlek type of runs. I did runs in Texas and Minnesota with these shoes.

Upper

I have been a fan of Topo for quite some time, but this is by far my favorite Topo upper design.  I think the shoe looks awesome.

Laces: The laces are a ribbed type of lace, strong and plenty of length if you need  to do runners knots or double loops, but was not so long that it caused me any issues.  They stayed tied during all runs
Tongue: The tongue is minimally padded with a lace loop that is typical of Topo's design language.  They do not do gussets, but through half a dozen shoes by them I have never once had any issues with tongue slippage.  That trend continues in the Specter 3, I just trust the design at this point.
Upper material: The engineered mesh upper is very comfortable, breathable and did an awesome job in the heat and humidity where I have struggled with some other shoes.  It seemed to displace water and dry very well, never had to wash the upper to remove sweaty smells.  In fact, I just smelled one while typing this and I can still smell the original factory odor after 82 miles of some gnarly temps and humidity.
Heel: The heel has some minor structure too it, but is still somewhat flexible.  I had no hot spots and stayed locked in very well during my runs in all conditions
Toe Room: The shoes are anatomical design and I am a big fan of it.  I had plenty of room to wiggle my toes, but never had foot slippage or felt out of control.
Fit: The shoes fit perfectly true to size in my size 12's.

Upper Positives: Breathability, design, lightness
Upper Negatives: None for me, but I have seen some others note some issues with the insoles slipping in some scenarios.  Through 82 miles, I did not have any issue with that, but wanted to note this experience from other users.

Outsole

Performance: The outsole has a pretty thick layer of rubber on it.  It performed great in dry and wet conditions.  I did a 6 mile run in the rain on tarmac in Minnesota and had no slippage and felt confident on the run.  It is protective enough for light trail and did not seem to deaden the underfoot feel.

Durability: This is my one negative on the shoe.  I have some shoes that just seem to exaggerate my wear area on the rear of the shoe.  This is one of those shoes.  At 82 miles, I am near foam worn in the rear part of the shoe, which is disappointing.  However, the surprising bit to me is that I am also wearing down the forefoot area of the shoe at 82 miles.  That does not happen very often to me at earlier than 300 plus miles.  The rear yes, the forefoot.........no.

If you are someone who doesn't commonly have wear issues, you will be good as this shoe as it has a thick layer of rubber.  However, if you are someone who does have wear issues it is something you may want to look at when shopping around.  The caveat here is........the underfoot feel of this shoe very very fun and may still be worth it.

Midsole

Topo Athletic Specter 3, 82 mile review Review
flare out in forefoot

The upper is great, the outsole has concerns.........the midsole for me is magic.  I really got along with the foam and geometry of this shoe.

The Foam: The ATPU foam is lively on this shoe.  I think a few things play into this.  1. The foam is just a top end foam and made for dynamic feedback.  2. The design of the outsole and foam breaks underneath allow for an extra spring off the forefoot.  3. There is a flare out of foam in the forefoot area and it feels like this has a mechanical effect of add a bit of a trampoline effect underfoot.  It allows the foam to compress and aids in the decompression of the foam underfoot by being outside the compression zone.

Geometry: You add the above foam and midsole material design with a really nice rocker geometry and you get a shoe that feels great on long runs where you like to change the gears or want to do steady pace.  It is a shoe that gives back and for me, does not resist the effort you are putting in.  On my long runs it performed great as I changed gears and was consistently feeding back when I went steady pace.  .

It underfoot experience of this shoe is one of the better ones I have encountered over the last couple of years and is a shoe I would probably strongly look at for a marathon if I didn't want to go plated.  As of "today", It would probably be between this shoe and the Dynafish Xiaonian.   Both shoes are superb.

Final Thoughts

Almost everything on the run met my expectations of the shoe from when I saw the presentations of it from youtubers during TRE last year.  Topo did a great job on this shoe.

The only area I am hoping they improve is looking at a more durable outsole material.  At $170 dollars I want better durability of the outsole, but for the ride..........I still may get the shoe because it was that good underfoot.  Of course, I would watch for deals =)
