ASICS Asics Sonicblast Review

I picked up this shoe around Christmas time and it got lost in the shuffle of some other shoes, so I pulled it out to see how if I have lost track of a banger or if it should have stayed hidden

Pros
  • Nice breathable upper
  • Versatile at higher end paces
  • Grippy outsole
  • Great fit
  • Stable platform
  • Long run protection
Cons
  • Continues trend of pricier MSRP's on running shoes at $180
  • For my mechanics, it is clunky in the heel

  • Hard time finding a flow within mechanics with shoe, always seemed to be fighting it
  • For this type of shoe, would expect it to be lighter

ASICS Asics Sonicblast Review

Review goal: I purchased this shoe with a couple along with another shoe around the holiday season.  Ran 1 10 mile run in it and it felt stiff and clunky.  Then I lost track of it a bit as I had some other shoe priorities to review and runs to prepare for that required a bit of a different type of shoe.   After finishing the 12 shoe in the Brands from the East series, I decided to pull this shoe out and give it a shine up and some additional run time to find out if I slept on a great shoe.

Deets and usage

Weight: My size 12's came in weighing: Left 10.7 Ounces, Right 10.6 Ounces
Extrapolated sample size 9: Roughly 89.0 ounces
Heel Stack: 45mm
Drop: 8mm drop
Upper:   Engineered mesh creates airy enduring comfort and security with 75% recycled polyester.

Outsole:    ASICSGRIP rubber provides excellent traction across variable road conditions.

Midsole
FF TURBO2 superfoam is featherweight and highly responsive ATPU typically reserved for racing shoes. It's the most responsive TURBO to date, with only FF LEAPedging out its overall performance.
FF BLAST MAX foam is light, soft, and bouncy olefin-based cushioning ideally suited for daily training.

Plate: ASTROPLATE is thermoplastic Pebax to improve forward propulsion.

MSRP: MSRP is $180.00.  I am seeing it on sale as of June 2, 2026.  My feedback will be based on the MSRP.

Use cases:
I ran 53.4 miles with a long of 13.5 miles.  I ran varying speeds in the lower and upper tempo paces.  I ran on dry concrete, tarmac and light trail.  I ran on wet concrete.   I did not do any office walking or normal walking in this shoe.

Upper

Laces: The laces are a high quality strong ribbed lace that do their function.  Nothing funky, just matching strong laces
Tongue: The tongue is lightly padded and fully gusseted.  The tongue also has perforations in it for extra breathability. I had no issues with tongue movement after lacing up the shoes on the run
Upper material: The upper material is nice and breathable, softer to the touch.  A very nice feeling upper
Heel: The heel counter has minimal structure and holds you in place well.  The lock down in these shoes was superb over 50 miles.  I didn't have to do any adjustments, had no heel slippage and no hot spots.  The collar area is minimally padded, which is perfect for this type of trainer and to my preference overall
Toe Room: I had no hot spots in the toe area and had nice room overall
Fit: The shoe fit perfectly true to size in my size 12's.  The upper, for me, is the highlight of this shoe

Outsole

With the splattering of rubber on the shoe, it does leave the foam open to abuse if you run on light trail conditions.  From an underfoot performance perspective, the shoe performed very well in wet and dry conditions.

However, at 53.4 miles I am already showing decent wear in my rear wear area on both feet.   I do not foresee getting above average durability out of this outsole, which I find disappointing at the price point.  I also find it a bit disappointing at the weight, because with this little coverage overall I would expect this to be under 10 ounces in my size 12 for this type of shoe.

Had a Pacer for one of my runs

This section may come across a bit rough, so let me start with a bit of a disclaimer.  I am noticing a bit of a trend where I may not get along with shoes that are dual layer, plastic plate set-ups with over 44mm in the heel and also rigid shoes.  To this point it is a bit anecdotal from the Hyperion Max 3 and now the Sonic Blast.  I'm not sure if it is a combination of the max stack and geometry, if the rigidity plays a part or what, but I just didn't get along with the shoe overall underfoot (which ends to be important to running)

Responsiveness of the foam: This is a shoe that needs some time to break in.  Probably around 15-18 miles the foam started feeling more lively underfoot, but still never become dynamic or punchy.  It felt better during my intermittent walks on intervals than on the run for me, but I would still classify this as a snappy type of foam.

The geometry is geared towards a higher pace tempo and feels clunky to me at slower paces.  I struggled on the run to get into a rhythm where I felt I was in partnership with the shoe.  Even when I would see I had a good efficiency or pace,  I largely felt like the shoe and I weren't in union.  It is probably a shoe that is more geared towards a higher cadence or accurate mechanic as I do have messy mechanics.  I never felt "fun" on the run.  However, I would have efficient runs with the shoe.  It's a bit of a conundrum for me, because the data would show good but I didn't really enjoy the experience.

I know this shoe works for some runners as I have seen it in my local run clubs on foot and on foot consistently.  However, for me, I have struggled with Asics "blast" heel design on the Superblast 2 and now the Sonicblast.  There is something in my mechanics that is not aligning with Asics design on the blast series.

Final thoughts

At 180 dollars, I would refer people to other shoes.  Shoes like the Li Ning Challenger, Saucony Speed series, Anta C202 7 if they were looking for plated type of shoes.  At the sale prices I am seeing, it brings it more into a category that I can see someone giving it a chance if they get along with this type of shoe.  The quality is there as Asics always makes a high quality shoe.  This one just didn't get along with me.

I gave it a 4 on performance because of what I have heard from other people as a fair assessment mixed with my experience.  For me personally, it is probably a 2 or 3.  However, I do not make up all runners, so want to take into consideration real world feedback on the shoe I have received.
