Summary

The Providence Marathon is a solid, well-organized race with a great expo and scenic country club loop. Beware of sneaky uphills at miles 6-8 and 21-24, plus a few late-race aid station hiccups. Despite the flaws, it's highly recommended!

Providence Rhode Races Review

I’ve had a long, eventful relationship with the Providence Marathon, experiencing it as a runner, a pacer, and now as a spectator to its recent rebirth. Here is a comprehensive look at the good, the bad, and the surprisingly hilly.

Pre-Race & Logistics Registration is consistently a breeze. One of my favorite logistical touches from my 2022 run was the early start option—a fantastic feature for walkers or runners who just need a bit more time on the course.

Communication and packet pickup have evolved over the years. In 2022, communication was a bit sparse—there weren't many hype emails, and the start line was vaguely listed as "downtown" without cross streets. Packet pickup that year was at a local running store with nightmarish parking. However, the organizers clearly listened to feedback, because by 2023, packet pickup moved to The Dorrance, delivering a much better "expo" feel that was easy to access by foot or public transit.

The Course & "The Ugly" Hills You wouldn’t think the Ocean State would be this hilly. While the topography maps look mostly flat, don't let them fool you. It’s not quite the New York Marathon, but the placement of the inclines is downright painful. You get a sneaky uphill at Mile 3, another along the bike path at Mile 5, and a bothersome stretch from Miles 6 through 8. The ultimate gut-punch is the 30-foot climb between Miles 21 and 24, which hurts immensely on tired legs.

That being said, the course has some beautiful highlights. The loop around the south side of the country club is stunning (and delightfully downhill), and despite long stretches being on a bike path, the crowd support is surprisingly phenomenal.

Aid Stations: Plentiful but Tricky In 2022, I praised the race for having a mind-blowing 18 aid stations on the marathon course—a level of support that is almost unheard of!

However, during the 90-degree heat of 2023 (where I heartbreakingly missed my 4:20 pacing goal by exactly 1 minute—sorry, pace group!), those back-half aid stations struggled to keep up. They weren't necessarily out of cups, but they were out of filled cups.

To any future volunteers, here are a few veteran tips:

  • Coolers and jugs go next to the tables, not on them, to make more room for cups.
  • Stack cups with card stock between them to fit more on the table.
  • Don’t overfill the cups!
  • (Personal preference: put the electrolyte beverage first!)

The 2024 Hiatus & The 2025 Comeback Just when I was ready for redemption, the 2024 event (then run by Venture) was canceled. The partial shutdown of the Washington Bridge created massive logistical and safety challenges, making it impossible to secure a route that wouldn't interfere with emergency vehicles and detours.

But following a two-year hiatus, the event returned successfully in 2025, rebranded as the Providence Rhode Races. Rhode Races and Events took over, completely revamping the route to bypass the Washington Bridge and moving the start/finish lines to Bold Point Park in East Providence. To manage city permitting, they smartly converted it into a "boutique" event capped at 2,500 runners (down from 6,000). This smaller field size gives the race an incredibly tight-knit, community feel while still delivering a premium marathon experience.

Final Verdict: Providence has given me surprising challenges, brutal heat, and beautiful miles. Whether you ran the old downtown route or are looking to tackle the new boutique Bold Point Park course, it is a well-put-together event with great resilience. Highly recommended!
