Li Ning Red Hare Pro 9 Review

Red Hare line

Li Ning has 3 levels, the Red Hare, The Red Hare Pro and the Red Hare Ultra.   Due to some shipping issues with Amazon, I ended up getting the Ultra much sooner than the Pro.  I would normally do the reviews starting with the lowest level I have, but the shipping gods had other ideas.   I did not include the base level Red Hare in my reviews.

  • Appearance and Power: Often described as a fire-red horse, sometimes associated with the mythical "blood-sweating" Ferghana horses.
  • The Saying: The phrase "Among men, Lü Bu; among horses, Red Hare" highlighted it as the ultimate steed, symbolizing unmatched prowess.
  • Owners: Originally ridden by the warlord Lü Bu[/]. After his death, it was kept by Cao Cao and eventually given to Guan Yu, symbolizing loyalty.
  • Legends: It was renowned for its incredible speed, famously traveling a thousand li in a single day, and was considered one of the three treasures of China.
  • Death: According to legend, it refused food after its final master, Guan Yu, died, demonstrating immense loyalty.
  • Legacy: Red Hare appears frequently in Chinese culture, including literature, gaming, and media, often representing the perfect warhorse.

Red Hare remains a symbol of loyalty, speed, and supreme quality in Chinese historical lore.

Review Goal and ordering snafu

With this coming in at under 10 ounces in my size 12's, it slots in as a lightweight daily trainer shoe for me.  So my plan going into my mileage was to use it for the daily grind type of miles and see how versatile they are within that scope of work.

I originally ordered the Red Hare Pro, Red hare Ultra and Challenger 6 at the same time using Amazon.  The Pro and Challenger that I ordered are still in a customs container somewhere being held hostage apparently as of 5/1/2026 (Ordered in February).  Li Ning did eventually refund the money, but then I had to reorder both shoes.   Luckily I found a pair of the Pro's on Amazon in stock within the US, so the replacement order came fairly quick.

Deets and Usage

Weight: My size 12's came in weighing: Left 9.8 Ounces, Right 9.7 Ounces
Extrapolated sample size 9: Roughly 8.8 ounces
Heel Stack: 36mm
Drop: 8mm drop
Upper:   Boom Fiber + Textile (breathable and durable), tough upper
Outsole:    GCR (Ground Control Rubber) for wet/dry traction

Midsole:  BOOM technology for soft, high-rebound cushioning (Peba)
Plate: No, but it does have a chassis/wing plate for stability / torsion control (still a nicely flexible shoe)

MSRP: It is at $99 on Amazon.  Aliexpress also has it, but it has an ever changing price.  I have seen it as low as $82 and high as $130.  on 5/1/2026 there seems to be a sale going on and I have some coupons available in the site, I can get a pair for $75 dollars.  (if you are an Aliexpress person, this is with "coins" savings)

Use cases:
I have 50 miles of running and another 6ish of walking.  My long run is 11 miles, but it easily can do higher teens in mileage.  I was fighting a cold during my long run and my body told me to shut it down.  I have several back to back runs of 7-8 miles in this shoe.  I ran on concrete, tarmac and light trail situations in dry conditions and on concrete in wet conditions.  I also walked the office, parking lot and neighborhood in the shoe.

I was able to do easy, steady and up tempo work in this shoe.   It was a very pleasant walking shoe.

Upper

Laces: The laces are a high quality strong lace that do their function.  Nothing funky, just matching strong laces
Tongue: The tongue is lightly padded, but no gusset.  The tongue also has perforations in it for extra breathability. I had not issues with tongue movement after lacing up the shoes on the run
Upper material: Boom Fiber + Textile (breathable and durable).  The material is strong, durable and a performance type of fit overall.  I do not personally find this to be the most breathable upper, especially in the area of the toe box.  It is a tightly bound material, but it is light and opaque.  I ran in a near 90 degree F day and it was a little warm, not bad, just a little arm.
Heel: The heel counter is a medium rigid heel counter that holds you in place.  The lock down in these shoes was superb over 50 miles.  I didn't have to do any adjustments, had no heel slippage and no hot spots.  The collar area is minimally padded, which is perfect for this type of trainer and to my preference overall
Toe Room: I had no hot spots in the toe area, from side to side I had a performance fit but with some room.  From bottom to top, there is not a lot of flex to the material so someone with a higher volume foot may struggle.
Fit: The shoe fit perfectly true to size in my size 12's.  I have heard other reviewers say Li Ning can run small, but this shoe came in true to size for me with the right amount of toe room.

Outsole

Unlike the Ultra, this is a rubber compound.  It is GCR vs GCU within the Li Ning terminology.  The grip and protection are very good and there is a thick layer of a waffle type of pattern of rubber on the outsole.

The rubber is a bit on the softer side, which is to enhance the grip functionality and soften the deadening sensation some rubber outsoles can have.  It accomplishes these goals in my experience with the shoes, but you may see wear evidence quicker in these shoes than the ones with the GCU material.  I still think you are going to get above average durability with this outsole because of the thickness of the rubber, but just something to be aware of that you will see the wear in your high wear areas.

The running performance of the outsole is great.  Sticky, protective and perfectly does the job as intended.  I would have no concerns taking these shoes on light trail adventures either with the thickness of the rubber outsole, design of the outsole and protectiveness of the upper material.

Midsole

This is a snappy underfoot feel, but a different snappy compared to the Xtep 2000KM 5.  While the Xtep is more like a spring, the Red Hare Pro is more like a bungee.  One is more direct while the other is a little more deliberate.  Both are quick and responsive underfoot, but the sensation for me is a little different.  I don't think I even have a preference, I just know that while they are similar, they also provide a different sensation.

The shoe overall is very smooth underfoot.  It has a gentle rocker that is more of a traditional set up which is geared towards those workhorse miles.  The shoe expects you to put energy and effort into it, but it works with you in that effort and rewards the energy.

The midsole in this, much like the Xtep 2000KM 5, is just the type of set up I would lean towards for my grinder miles, my daily trainer type of miles if I was in consumer mode.  It is versatile in it's usage from a effort standpoint (can do easy pace to up tempo, track workouts), can be used for walking and around town type of activities and can also do long run day efforts.  It is a shoe that can do 75% of what you need from a mileage standpoint and the midsole is going to be durable.

It is not a shoe that will provide a lot of assistance in return, but that is not the purpose of this shoe, it is a shoe that will work with you, protect you and is light on the feet so you can forget about the shoe and just run!  It is a shoe meant for training the legs so that when you step into a run assisted type of shoe, your performance is that much better.

I got most of these miles using these shoes solely, so they have been my main shoe without intermixing other shoes in.  The midsole has shown no signs of "wearing" out with daily use or needing a recovery day to get the best out of it.

Final Thoughts

Another entry by Li Ning that is a value proposition, high quality and very enjoyable running shoe available at a better price than it's competition in the Western markets.  This would easily compete with shoes like the Hoka Mach, Asics Novablast, Brooks Hyperion type of shoes.  it can easily be found for 40 to 50 dollars less expensive than those models and in some cases offers better durability and performance.

I'm on lunch at work writing this review at the office, and wearing the shoes.  Before I did this review type of thing, this is exactly the type of shoe I would hunt because of the versatility and price point, in addition to the quality of manufacturing and durability of the shoe.

Li Ning is making some impressive shoes.

This is an incentivized review

This is not brand sponsored, but it is part of a series of reviews that WeeViews has sponsored along with some chip in purchased by me because I am now addicted to AliExpress
