I was looking at this shoe and it reminded me a bit of how the Asics Superblast looked, AliExpress had a sale going on so I decided to give the shoe a try. How did the shoe do after 50 Review miles?

Lin Ning Yueying 5 Pro Review

Key Aspects of Li-Ning Company:

  • Market Position: It is a premier Chinese sports brand, often ranking just behind international competitors like Nike and Adidas in the Chinese market.
  • Core Categories: The company focuses heavily on footwear, apparel, and equipment for basketball, running, fitness, and badminton, with, for example, a strong "China Li-Ning" fashion line.
  • Growth Strategy: The company is aggressively expanding internationally, with a target of 30% revenue from non-Mainland markets by 2025, supported by specialized overseas, including a new Hong Kong headquarters.
  • Partnerships: Notable for partnerships like the 2012 deal with NBA player Dwyane Wade and securing the Chinese sports delegation's apparel contract (2025–2028).
  • Technological Focus: Significant R&D investment drives innovations like the 'BOOM' midsole technology.
  • Operational Structure: Operates a mix of directly operated, retail, and "China Li-Ning" flagship stores, with a growing e-commerce presence

Review Goal

When I saw this shoe on Amazon and AliExpress, I thought it had some strong hints of a SuperBlast (Asics) flavor of a shoe, at a much lower cost.   I tried to remove that direct comparison coming in and just view the shoe in the parameters of "is this a good daily trainer, greater than max shoe that leans into long steady pace runs".

But it was hard to not compare it a bit to the Superblast.

Deets and Usage notes

So, my first lesson in running shoes from the East is that they mostly don't provide the specification details that we are used to in the West. So, some of this is my best guess on compiled information from reviews and ChatGPT.

Weight: My size 12's came in weighing: Left 10.7 Ounces, Right 10.7 Ounces
Extrapolated sample size 9: Roughly 8.8 ounces (almost same weight as Superblast 2)
Heel Stack: What I can find through ChatGPT and other reviews is that this has a Heel stack of 42mm-44mm.  When I put a Yueying 5 Pro shoe on one foot and Superblast on the other, they isn't much difference
Drop: Around a 7-8mm drop
Upper:   Single-layer jacquard mesh for high breathability, suitable for summer
Outsole:   GCU (Ground Control Unit) for superior anti-slip, wet-grip, and wear resistance.

Midsole: Dual layer midsole.  Base layer as an EVA based foam for stability features with a fairly wide base.  Top layer is their "Super Boom" foam formulated for this type of trainer.  Super Boom is a PEBAX-based supercritical foam.
Plate: No, but it does have a shank for increased stability.

MSRP: Amazon has this shoe in colorways from 110 to 120 USD.  On AliExpress I have seen it between 70USD and 100USD.  I purchased the shoe for 73.92 and that was "out the door".  This was during their Anniversary sale.

Use cases:

I put in 50 miles in.  My long run was 17.4 miles and my shortest run was 7ish miles.   I did largely steady state and easy pace, but the shoe can pick up the pace if you want to throw in some strides, it just doesn't want to live there.  I ran on concrete, tarmac, light trail conditions (Grass/dirt) mostly in Dry states as we haven't got much rain here in Texas lately.  I did run on a wet street from some construction work going on and the outsoles held great.   This is is a prototypical max (greater) stack shoe for long easy to steady pace runs.

I also used this shoe for some walking, probably another 5 miles of walking in addition to the 50 miles of running.

Upper

Laces: The laces are a high quality strong lace with a light "grit" pattern on it to help keep the laces stationary after being tied.
Tongue: The tongue is lightly padded with a full gusset.  The tongue also has a lace loop and some laser cut holes for breathability
Upper material: The upper is a Single layer Jacquard mesh with TPU overlays for support.  The upper has some lighter mesh areas to assist in breathability.  The midsole and forefoot area with those lighter mesh areas are light enough to see your socks through
Heel: The heel counter is a fairly rigid heel counter that holds you in place.  The lock down in these shoes was superb over 50 miles.  I didn't have to do any adjustments, had no heel slippage and no hot spots.  The collar area is padded, but not thickly.  It has a nice amount of padding without making it like other max trainers where they are pillows.
Toe Room: I had no hot spots from the toe room and felt like I had good wiggle room without any slippage.
Fit: The shoe fit perfectly true to size in my size 12's.  I have heard other reviewers say Li Ning can run small, but this shoe came in true to size for me with the right amount of toe room.

*Note on sizing for Eastern brands.  Make sure you look at reviews, especially reviews that may be the same size as you to see how they work.  Anta's have been true to size with American sizing, but it may be a good idea to measure your foot in metric and find some comparison charts when purchasing on line.

Outsole

Lin Ning Yueying 5 Pro Review
after 50 miles, very little wear

The outsole uses a GCU (Liquid rubber) type of outsole and it handled great in all conditions I ran in.  It does squeak a bit on linoleum at the office, but when the shoes look this good it just makes your colleagues check out your shoes, so that is no big deal =).

The wear on this outsole looks to be above average.  You will get some foam damage with the exposed foam, but that won't effect the functionality of the shoe at all

Midsole

Midsole set up: Base layer is an EVA based foam to add the base, structure and stability of the shoe.   The top layer is Super Boom, which is a PEBAX based supercritical foam.  There is a shank plate in the midfoot area to further provide torsion stability.

This shoe is firm and tall to begin with.  It took around 10 miles for this to start breaking in and then around 17 miles in it became a nice experience.  The foam combination feel similar to the ZipFoam in the latest Topo Atmos 2, which for me is a positive thing.   It is very protective underfoot and more of a relaxed slow spring back over snappy spring back experience.

I will get into a direct comparison with the Superblast 2 in the next section as there are a lot of similarities in these shoe designs.

The ride of this shoe is very smooth.  It was easy to get into a nice steady groove with this shoe for my long runs.  The foam is not "lively", but rather organic underfoot.  It feels like it is working along with you, but not really giving you extra above and beyond.  The geometry of the shoe is more of a traditional type of set up with a rocker geometry in the forefoot and nice rounded heel bevel.

It provides the type of ride on long runs that you can forget the shoe is there over the miles.  It is on the firmer side though, so if you are looking for a Fresh Foam type of softness, this is not a shoe for you.

SuperBlast 2 comp

Lin Ning Yueying 5 Pro Review
Flare in heel makes the SB significantly longer

It's been a while since I had the Superblast 2's on my feet.  I forgot about the heel flare on the Superblast 2's.  I backed each shoe up against the wall and you can see in the 1 photo how much longer the shoe becomes with that design.  The heel is the area I had some issues with the Superblast 2.

So let me get this out of the way, the YueYing 5 pro is not the Superblast 2.  I am using the 2 as comparison because I haven't run in the 3 and from all accounts that shoe became very soft.  The 2 is known to be on the firmer side which I thought was a good comp for ride.

I did some walking and jogging with a shoe of each model on my feet.  The midfoot and forefoot experience of the Superblast 2 was bouncier and more responsive than that of the YueYing 5 Pro.  You can feel the foam just has more spring and response to it.  However, when I move to a heel striking cycle the YueYing 5 Pro was better for me.   There is something in the heel design of the SB2 that I don't get along with.   If I could take the heel design of the YueYing 5 Pro and put it into the SB2, winner winner.

From a ride perspective these 2 shoes have some similarities.  They are both easy to fall into a pocket pace and stay with it.  They both assist and reward a steady pace effort.  The difference is that effort pace feels at ease at a little higher pace with the SB2 than that of the YueYing 5 Pro.

They both have nice stable midsole designs and very similar upper geometries.   While this shoe does not match the SB2 in my opinion, if the change in foams in the Superblast 3 have gone to soft for you, the YueYing 5 Pro may be a shoe worth checking out and you are able to find it at a lower cost of Superblast 2.......even with it being on sale

Pricing / Purchasing options

As I noted in the deets section, I originally noted this shoe being around $120 on Amazon.  They now have colorways at 110 and you can find them for in the 70 and 80 dollar range on AliExpress.   In my opinion if this shoe was on the US market with one of the Western brands, it would probably be between 165 and 180 dollars.

This shoe offers a significant value proposition for someone who likes greater than max shoes on the firmer side of things for long runs as it is also going to be nicely durable.

Final Thoughts

My first shoe from Li Ning, with several more coming into the review mile runway.  So far, Li Ning's quality, sizing options and pricing are impressive.   This is a shoe I like putting on my feet and they protected me on my long runs.  I also quite like the look of the Black/white colorway.

This is an incentivized review

This is not brand sponsored, but it is part of a series of reviews that WeeViews has sponsored along with some chip in purchased by me because I am now addicted to AliExpress
