Key Aspects of Xtep:

  • Running Focus: Established China’s first running research lab in 2018, the brand has aided hundreds of athletes in winning major championships.
  • Key Products: The 160X 5.0 Pro and 360X 2.0 are flagship shoes known for high-energy return, carbon plates, and comfort.

  • Strategy: Strong investment in research and development to produce, lightweight, breathable, and durable "super shoes".

Review Goal

The ratings and final thoughts are on my view that as a consumer, I would buy this shoe as a lightweight daily trainer at a price that is a positive value proposition compared to the market mostly available to me.  I am just trying to relay the viewpoint of my scoring as it is starting to morph a bit as I dig deeper into the market from the East.

Deets and Usage

So, my first lesson in running shoes from the East is that they mostly don't provide the specification details that we are used to in the West. So, some of this is my best guess on compiled information from reviews and ChatGPT.

Weight: My size 12's came in weighing: Left 10.0 Ounces, Right 10.1 Ounces
Heel Stack: 36 (+/-2mm), but 36MM feels right underfoot
Drop: 6 MM
Upper: 3D Stereo Woven Mesh
Outsole: CPU (Cast Polyurethane) – Rated for 2,000km durability.

Midsole: Full-length ACE Foam (Supercritical TPU-based foam).  Some reports of Peba, but can't confirm
Plate: Wing-shaped TPU plate to prevent over compression and stabilize torsion

MSRP: I have seen this shoe between 65ish dollars to 75ish dollars on AliExpress.  I got the shoes for 67.23USD after taxes and with free shipping.

Use cases:

I put in 52 miles overall of running miles and around another 10 miles of walking in the shoes.  I did up tempo, steady pace, varying speeds, and long runs of 13.2 miles and 15 miles.  I ran on concrete, tarmac, track, dirt in dry conditions, the treadmill and on concrete in wet conditions.  I walked on office floors, parking lots, streets and pathways.

Upper

Laces: Nice strong laces, stayed tied on all runs and did their job.
Tongue: The tongue is lightly padded and perfect for the upper design and usage case of the shoe.  It has a lace loop, but does not have a gusset.  I had no slippage on the run of the tongue, it stayed in place very well.
Upper material: The upper material is a fairly breathable and durable material.  The shoes materials are impressive at this price (and much higher) as the seemed intent on being durable as well as performing, the upper is a good example of this.
Heel: The heel has minimal structure, as you would expect with a shoe with more lightweight design intent
Toe Room: I had no hot spots from the toe room and felt like I had good wiggle room without any slippage.  It feels like there is plenty of room in the toe box with solid lock down in the midfoot and heel.  There is also nice vertical room without causing any toe slipping.  It feels like they have rounded the toe box a bit, which is nice
Fit: The shoe fit perfectly true to size in my size 12's.  No adjustments needed at all, great fit.

*Note on sizing for Eastern brands.  Make sure you look at reviews, especially reviews that may be the same size as you to see how they work.  Anta's have been true to size with American sizing, but it may be a good idea to measure your foot in metric and find some comparison charts when purchasing on line.

Outsole

The outsole has performed excellently through roughly 60 miles of travel.  It has handled all conditions very well and the durability is looking to last above average, which for me is nice to see.  The one and only downfall of the outsole is if you are walking on linoleum, it might squeak a bite.

If you have light trails in your area that are mostly dirt, loose gravel, grass type of surfaces than these shoes may work as a light trail option if you like doing a lit mix up on the run.  The exposed foam may not be best for larger rocks, but for the other lighter conditions the outsole has enough depth and grip to handle it well.

The material is quite grippy and did great in wet conditions as well.  I am quite impressed with this outsole material.

Midsole

So the first thing with the midsole is it is a bit firm at the beginning.  The foam needs a little time to break in.  It starts of as firm and snappy (not blunt firm) and then transitions in to a snappy punchy bounce back type of experience.

The foam has a Wing plate does a nice job of providing some torsion stability, but doesn't overly stiffen the shoe.  It has nice flex front to back and side to side.  I would consider this a true neutral shoe.  Not unstable, but no stability features either.

The shoe has a nice, but not aggressive rocker to it.  It has a more traditional trainer feel to it underfoot and I am quite honestly here for it with this midsole material.  I wouldn't run a marathon in this shoe, but it is more than capable of doing long runs.  I did a 13.2 mile run and it went so well, I did a 15 miler the following weekend.  This shoe reminds me a bit of one of my favorite trainers a couple years ago, the Brooks Hyperion Max (OG).  It also had a firmer foam, simple rocker that I could just go for miles in.  Difference is, that shoe was $180, this one I got for less than $70.

As a walking shoe.  This is a shoe I keep grabbing to go walking in.  I went to Wisconsin on a work trip and this shoe got miles along Lake Michigan, in Milwaukee city streets, through Chicago airport and some other miles.  While on the trip I also did some running on the treadmill...............which I don't enjoy, but the shoes did well on that as well.

Pricing reflection

If this shoe were in the US market and in running stores, it would probably be in competition with the Brooks Hyperion 3, New Balance Rebel, Brooks Ghost type of shoe from a pricing stand point.  To be able to get this shoe for under 70 bucks at the quality of shoe it is, is really remarkable.  This is a shoe I will continue to use after my series of reviews is done and it is one of the least expensive ones I have purchased.

If you haven't noticed through my 4 reviews, I haven't really used the word "cheap".  That is on purpose, because I think these shoes are about value proposition and they are offering the consumer, a positive value proposition option.   So far, the shoes are not "cheap" in the way that word makes you think.  They are however, good value propositions.

Final Thoughts

I would have zero issue recommending these shoes as lightweight, durable every day trainers that offer a versatile workhorse type of shoe that can be used in many ways, on many surfaces, in many conditions.   It shines at tempo and steady state runs, can handle long distance runs and is a versatile trainer at a price we don't see for a "new model" in the USA market.

I just wish Xtep made more of their shoes in mens size 12.  That has been my second lesson in this experience.

Have a great time on the trails
