Anta C202 7 Review

Anta is among the top 3 sportswear companies world wide (Behind Nike and Adidas only) and the largest in China.  They have Klay Thompson and Kyrie Irving with endorsements of their basketball shoes.

They have opened a brick and mortar Anta shop in Los Angeles, have a US website that is active and also sell on Amazon.  At this point they are only selling a segment of their running shoes in the US.

They have recently bought 29% shares in Puma, which makes them the majority owner from a shares perspective.  In addition they have partial ownership/joint ventures in other brands such as Amer Sports.  I mention that, because brands under Amer Sports include Arc'teryx, Salomon and Peak Performance.

This may be the largest running shoe brand you have not heard of (it was for me).

The Deets and Usage Cases

So, my first lesson in running shoes from the East is that they mostly don't provide the specification details that we are used to in the West. So, some of this is my best guess on compiled information from reviews and ChatGPT.

Weight: My size 12's came in weighing: Left 8.9 Ounces, Right 9.1 Ounces
Approximately 205g - 236g (7.2 - 8.3 oz) depending on size.
Heel Stack: Most postings I can find call out around 34mm, but I don't think that includes outsole and insole measurements.  Most reviewers think the heel stack is around 40mm total and I would agree with that.  There is no way total stack is 34mm.
Drop: 6 MM
Upper: A-WEB mesh with TPU for a breathable, secure fit.
Outsole: Liquid Grip rubber for high-wear durability and traction.

Midsole: Dual-layer Nitro Edge Pro foam for soft landing and snappy rebound
Plate: Yes Full-length Carbon Fiber Plate for stability and propulsion.

MSRP: $130 on Anta's website, $130 on Amazon, a varying of prices on other sites like Aliexpress, Kicksown.  For the shoes from the East series I only bought from Anta, Amazon and Aliexpress.

Use cases:

I put in 51 miles overall with a long run of 15 miles.  I did up tempo, steady pace, varying speeds, Progressive run on a track and mixed in some walking to take video clips and just see how walking was in a fully carbon plated shoe.  I ran on concrete, tarmac, track, dirt in dry conditions and on concrete in wet conditions.

Upper

 Anta C202 7 Review
Featuring Layla

Laces: Nice strong laces with a gritty type of finish to assist with staying in place.  Worked great
Tongue: The tongue is a light, race shoe type of tongue.  It has a lace loop, but does not have a gusset.  I had no slippage on the run of the tongue, it stayed in place very well.  I would like to see at least a partial gusset in the future, but also am not concerned without one.
Upper material: The A-web mesh is nice and breathable.  If you are in hot / humid conditions, this is a great upper for those conditions.
Heel: The heel has minimal structure, as you would expect with a shoe with more of a racing upper.  I had no heel slippage and good lock down
Toe Room: I had no hot spots from the toe room and felt like I had good wiggle room without any slippage.  It feels like their is plenty of room in the toe box with solid lock down in the midfoot and heel.  There is also nice vertical room without causing any toe slipping.  It is a pleasant fit.
Fit: The shoe fit perfectly true to size in my size 12's.  No adjustments needed at all, great fit.

*Note on sizing for Eastern brands.  Make sure you look at reviews, especially reviews that may be the same size as you to see how they work.  Anta's have been true to size with American sizing, but it may be a good idea to measure your foot in metric and find some comparison charts when purchasing on line.

Outsole

 Anta C202 7 Review
No sign of wear at 51 miles

Outsole: Liquid Grip rubber for high-wear durability and traction.

This is one of the best outsoles I have encountered.   It has great traction on all dry surfaces, on wet concrete and the part that has me most impressed is the durability.  It is rare that I don't at least see some wear by 50 miles and commonly at 30 with my mechanics.  50 miles in and this shoe doesn't show any.  If it wasn't for some dirt on it, you wouldn't be able to tell I ran in it from looking at the outsole.

The one and only negative is it is squeaky on linoleum, but it's not like I am wearing these around the office on a normal basis.  It changed into them to leave work and go running and heard the squeak.

Midsole - the heartland of this shoe

If I could compare this midsole to another underfoot feel, Adidas Lightstrike Pro (as found in the Pro 3 and Evo SL) along with some formulations of Nitro Foam by Puma would be the closest feel I could compare.   I love this foam and I'm not afraid to sing it to the world.  It has that airy dense spring to it that just propels you forward.  It is an extremely lively foam.

I don't always get along with plates and that includes non-carbon ones.  So I took a little chance buying a fully carbon plated shoe.  When I say fully, I mean it extends a bit out past the heel.   I will link to Anta's tech spec page and you can look at the plate design if interested.  What I can tell you is that it is the best organic set up of foam, plate and geometry I have encountered.

So, is this midsole for racing or is it a super trainer?  My thoughts on that are "it depends".   For me, it is probably a mix of race day shoe and super trainer usage.  I am not sure if I would want to use a full carbon plate shoe for a full marathon, but that is mainly based on my own likes, speeds and experiences.  I would easily use this for race day on a half marathon or below.   On my 15 mile run, it did brilliantly.

I feel as though this shoe is not quite set up for the elite speeds, but is more geared democratically towards more runners.  When I was walking in the shoe, it was not as awkward as I was expecting.  It was way more comfortable to walk in that the Hyperion Max 3 or Cielo shoes by Hoka.  So I think the set up is better for a higher range of paces, but may just not the higher end.

Which means for me, it is perfect.

Short story: I took these shoes to run club at Eureka Heights brewery in Houston, Texas.  I had some other runners ask to try them on and their faces were all like "holy Sh*t" those are nice.  And then I told them the price..........

Pricing

$130 USD.   If this shoe were one of the Main US Brands (who have their shoes made from the same factories), it would be a $200-220 shoe in my opinion.  If On made it, probably more.

I don't know what Anta's plans are long term in this market, but I hope they continue with the more budget friendly offerings that not only don't sacrifice quality, but provide a better product in some cases (like this shoe).

I quite honestly, from a consumer perspective, am getting frustrated with the pricing of running shoes.

Final Thoughts

Did the shoes meet my expectations?  Well, they blew them out of the water to be honest.   I am a bit confused as to why this isn't a "hot" shoe in runner circles.  The price and performance is hard to match in the US market and these are now readily available to the running population here.

It is a shoe I would strongly recommend for someone that matches it's intended use case.
Ideal For

  • Marathon and half-marathon racing.
  • Daily tempo runs and speed training.
  • Runners seeking a cushioned, stable carbon shoe
