HOKA Mafate 5 Review

I ran a 100-mile race in the Hoka Mafate 5, basically straight out of the box without ever testing it on long runs.
.
Wore it around for a week before the race, then showed on race day hoping for the best.
.
I needed a max-cushioned shoe to help me get through the race with a mild case of plantar fasciitis in my right foot.
.
My go-to shoe has been the Nike Zegama 2 (No complaints. I love this shoe.). But for even more cushioning and protection I gave the Mafate a shot. And it didn't disappoint.

Hoka Mafate original

I bought these shoes directly from Hoka (Hoka Mafate 5). And they're only available in two colors

  • Skyward Blue
  • Neon Rose

When I ordered these shoes, only the hot pick color was available in my size (13).
.
Here's a quick look at the Hoka Mafate 5 specs:

  • Price: $185
  • Stack Height: 40/36 mm
  • Drop: 4 mm
  • Weight: 10.8 oz
  • Outsole: Vibram Megagrip + Litebase
  • Release Date: 2025

This shoe can get you to the finish line

I wore this shoe for 29+ hours and 100 miles at the Mountain Lakes 100-Mile Ultra hosted by Go Beyond Racing in Oregon...untested.
.
And it did everything I hoped it would. I've ran this race 11 years in a row, and didn't want to miss it.
.
The Hoka Mafate 5 provided the max-cushioning, stability, and heel protection I needed to finish this race.
.
Trail conditions for this race were actually pretty good. Mild temps, and only light rain for the last few hours of the race. That means I didn't test these shoes in muddy conditions, or water crossings. But I think these shoes would handle that just fine.
.
Now if Hoka would just give the tongue a little padding, this shoe would be even better.
