This is my second year running Glass City Marathon, third year running at this event. I took off 42 minutes from last year thanks to this flat and fast course. I always love this race! It starts nice and early, so usually heat is not a challenge. Aid stations are frequent and the volunteers are quick to provide support racers need. The roads are in great condition, so no trip hazards. I always appreciate the volunteers and residents who come out to cheer on racers - from the first place USATF qualifying runners to the last runner to cross the finish line. I'm a trail racer by heart, and I will ALWAYS prioritize running Glass City every April.
One of the standout features of the Glass City Marathon is the incredible crowd support from the people of Toledo. Spectators line the course from start to finish, creating an energizing atmosphere that motivates runners every step of the way. The course winds through neighborhoods and there are always people in their driveways ready to cheer every runner through. You might even find surprise water, snacks, or an adult beverage handed out. Unlike many mid-size road marathons that can have long, quiet stretches, this race offers very few dead spots. The enthusiasm of the local community makes a real difference, turning the marathon into a city-wide celebration and giving participants a boost when they need it most.
Maybe the best part about the GCM is that it's a fast and flat course. It's a great place to get a PR or Boston Qualify (is also a USA Track & Field Certified Course and Sanctioned Race). There are two very small but long-feeling hills: one right at the start and one near mile 18. Aid stations are strategically located at the top of the hills and the energy there is amazing! Follow this beautiful course along bike trails, through Toledo neighborhoods, and through metroparks. Every road crossing is policed by law enforcement, ensuring the runners have the right of way. Everything feels super safe and comfortable.
