Speedland RX:FPY: The Up & Runners Review

Speedland’s RX:FPY pushes the boundaries of running shoe design with its removable plate system and premium uncompressed ATPU foam. Billed as a do-it-all trainer, it promises adaptability—soft and cushioned without the plate, firm and responsive with it. After rigorous testing, our duo from "The Up & Runners"—Eric McIntyre and Cody Jett—logged over 60 miles to see if this $300 shoe lives up to the hype. Spoiler: it’s a standout, but not without quirks.

  • ASICS Magic Speed—snappy and responsive with plate inserted (Cody)
  • Adidas Evo SL—similar foam feel, though a little firmer (Eric)

Performance & Versatility

The RX:FPY shines as a versatile trainer, handling everything from recovery jogs to tempo efforts with its plush foam and optional plate. It’s a strong contender for road ultras or a one-shoe rotation, though its weight with the plate and fit issues temper its race-day potential.

Cody (logged 33 miles): “After 33 miles of testing, from easy jogs to all-out efforts, I’ve put this shoe through the wringer. The Speedland RX:FPY excels in performance and versatility, adapting seamlessly to any type of run. Without the plate, it provides a cushioned, comfortable ride for daily miles and recovery runs. Insert the plate, and it transforms into a responsive, speed-ready shoe, perfect for workouts and tempo efforts. It checks nearly every box—from easy days to long runs, even making a strong case for road ultra marathons. The only place it might fall short? Marathon race day, where lighter, more aggressive options may offer that extra edge.”

Eric (logged 31 miles): “This shoe works for anything except for potentially faster racing. The foam is soft yet stable enough to support you on long runs, recovery runs, and easy runs. That and without the plate the shoe actually falls on the lighter side of a standard daily trainer. This created a VERY enjoyable experience regardless of speed. If you are someone who wants a little bit more rigidity or pop you can insert the rigid carbon fiber plate which does change the sensation but maintains the overall fun feeling of that ATPU foam. The only reason I wouldn't consider this for a faster race is because with the plate the shoe is a little heavy for a racer and for me personally I would need a slightly more dialed fit.”

Upper

The Spacer Mesh upper is breathable and comfortable, with a single BOA dial aiming for lockdown. It’s a win for wider feet but could be a mixed bag for others.

Cody: “The upper on the Speedland RX:FPY is breathable, accommodating, and surprisingly secure. As someone with a wider foot, I found the fit to be comfortable without feeling sloppy, and the single BOA dial does a great job of locking things down. Speedland nailed it—the fit is comfortable yet locked-in, proving that sometimes, less really is more (except when it comes to post-run snacks). However, narrow-footed runners, beware—the extra room might lead to some bunching and a less dialed-in fit.”

Eric: “The upper is a ‘Spacer Mesh’ which is relatively lightweight and breathable. The shoe boasts a bootie like upper without a traditional lacing system and some light cushioning in the heel for some good comfort. The shoe uses a boa lacing system with 3 ‘straps’ that run over the top of the shoe. To me the upper was very comfortable and breathable overall. I think that if there was a dual boa set up then I wouldn't have had any issues with it but unfortunately the width of the shoe paired with the singular boa just didn't work with my foot. I found that I had to choose between my heel sliding up or my forefoot being overtightened and I even experienced some numbness at points.”

Midsole

The uncompressed SCF foam steals the show—soft, stable, and smooth, with a responsive kick when the plate’s added. It’s a premium ride that doesn’t need the plate to shine, though some may prefer the extra pop.

Cody: “The Uncompressed SCF Foam in the RX:FPY is pure gold—lightweight, responsive, and comfortable, with just the right amount of snap when the plate is in. It’s like your buddy rolling up to the party with a bottle of Pappy Van Winkle instead of the usual bargain bin whiskey. Soft, energetic, and ridiculously smooth, it makes every stride feel just right—whether you’re jogging or flying.”

Eric: “This thing is SPECIAL. A beaded ATPU blended drop-in midsole paired with an external uncompressed ATPU shell. The foam is soft yet stable and SUPER responsive. I expected the foam to be a little more ‘bouncy’ but I found that the sensation was a little more smooth. I ran pretty much every time of run in the shoe during testing and I felt very comfortable at a variety of paces. Now with the rigid plate the shoe does get some ‘pop’ and the overall sensation becomes a little more firm, though still more soft than not. For me though I found that I much preferred the shoe without the plate even when doing faster intervals.”

Outsole

The Scratch Rubber outsole provides strong grip on dry and wet roads, with full coverage adding durability. It performs reliably across various runs and conditions.

Cody: “The Scratch Rubber Outsole has been rock-solid on dry roads, providing good grip and no issues across all my runs. It’s been reliable for everything from easy miles to faster efforts, but there’s one big question mark—I haven’t tested it in the rain yet.”

Eric: “This outsole is great. The shoe utilized a web scratch rubber which doesn't look like there is much of a pattern but if you look closely you'll notice a scratchy design. This outsole is full coverage and grips the roads VERY well even on wet surfaces. I was a little skeptical with how it would hold up as my roads have been frosty as of late here in Utah but I didn't sleep even once in the shoe.”

Who should buy the Speedland RX:FPY?

✔️ Best For:

  • Runners who want one shoe to handle it all (Cody)
  • Wide-footed runners seeking a secure, breathable fit (Cody)
  • Road ultra enthusiasts or travelers who run (Eric)
  • Those who don’t mind a premium price for premium tech (Eric)

❌ Not Ideal For:

  • Budget-conscious runners ($300 is no pocket change) (Cody, Eric)
  • Narrow-footed runners needing a snug fit (Cody, Eric)
  • Marathon racers seeking lighter, aggressive options (Cody)

Final Verdict

The RX:FPY is a versatile, premium trainer that adapts to nearly any run—if you can get past the price and dial in the fit. It’s a love letter to foam fans and a bold step in modular design, but it’s not for everyone.

Cody: “I’d recommend the Speedland RX:FPY to runners who want one shoe to handle it all—and don’t mind the ‘premium’ price tag. It’s versatile, comfortable, and performs like a champ, whether you’re cruising through easy miles or cranking up the pace. I really enjoyed running in it, but let’s be honest—$300 is no pocket change.”

Eric: “Wide footed runners, Road Ultras, One shoe rotation'ers, Travelers that run! The $300 price tag will scare people away but if the shoe is replacing 2 shoes in your rotation or last TWICE as long as a shoe normally would (a characteristic of most Speedland shoes) then really you're getting great value with the way shoes are priced these days.”
