ASICS Nimbus 27 Review

I was eager to test the ASICS Nimbus 27. Over the past decade, I’ve consistently included some version of the Nimbus in my running rotation. It has always been a solid daily trainer, providing reliable cushioning and durability. With this latest edition, ASICS has made a few key refinements aimed at enhancing the shoe’s overall comfort and performance.

Thinking back, the first Nimbus I ever reviewed was the ASICS Nimbus 17. Hard to believe so much time has passed. Since then, I’ve run in most versions, noting the changes and improvements along the way. There were some versions of the Nimbus that it felt like ASICS simply did not put effort into (like the Nimbus 20 that had the worst fit of any trainer I've ever tried). But slowly they've improved making the Nimbus fit more true to size.

ASICS Nimbus 27 Quick Facts

  • Price: $165
  • Weight: 10.7 oz (men’s), 9.2 oz (women’s)
  • Stack Height: 43.5 mm heel / 35.5 mm forefoot (men’s), 41.5 mm heel / 33.5 mm forefoot (women’s)
  • Drop: 8 mm

Upper

While this has nothing to do with how the shoe feels, the Nimbus always feels like it comes in fun colors! I love the aqua blue this year. My experience with the Nimbus line has been a mix of highs and lows. There have been years when I couldn’t wear the women’s size 11 wide because it felt far too tight. Thankfully, the Nimbus 27 has a more forgiving fit.

The latest model introduces a revamped engineered jacquard mesh upper, offering improved breathability and structure compared to previous knit versions. The toebox now has more room, allowing for natural toe splay, which is particularly beneficial during longer runs. The midfoot remains snug, enhanced by a thin, gusseted knit tongue that ensures a secure wrap around the foot. Meanwhile, the heel area is well-cushioned, with a sturdy heel counter that keeps the foot in place.

A good running shoe should feel almost invisible on the foot, and for the most part, the Nimbus 27 does just that. There are no noticeable pressure points or hotspots. I haven't gotten any blisters or hot spots. My typical running shoe size ranges from a women’s 10 to 11 wide, and the Nimbus 27 in size 11 fits comfortably.

Midsole:

When asked if the ASICS Nimbus 27 has significant changes, my answer is yes. ASICS has added an extra 2 mm of FF Blast Plus Eco foam to the midsole, increasing the heel stack height to 43.5 mm.

Despite the additional cushioning, the ride is firmer and more responsive than you might expect. ASICS has done a great job balancing softness with energy return, ensuring the shoe doesn’t feel overly plush or sluggish. While it’s not as snappy as the Superblast 2, it offers enough responsiveness to handle a variety of paces. The shoe’s geometry facilitates smooth heel-to-toe transitions, aided by a well-designed heel bevel and a flexible forefoot. These elements make the Nimbus 27 a great option for easy runs, recovery days, and even longer efforts.

Where does the Nimbus 27 fit into my rotation? My first run in this shoe was on a chilly, windy day when my only goal was to finish. It handled the conditions well, providing ample cushioning and support.

The biggest surprise came when I tried increasing my pace. Unlike earlier versions, which sometimes felt sluggish, the Nimbus 27 responded smoothly. While it’s still not a speed-focused shoe, it allows for a slight uptick in tempo without feeling awkward or clunky. For most runners, it will function best as a daily trainer rather than a workout shoe.

Outsole:

Durability and traction have long been strengths of ASICS running shoes, and the Nimbus 27 is no exception. The outsole incorporates a HYBRID ASICSGRIP construction with a ribbed pattern designed to improve durability compared to past models.

I’ve tested the Nimbus 27 on wet pavement and light trails without any slipping issues. After logging about 100 miles in them, I expect them to last close to 400 miles. ASICS shoes, especially those in the Nimbus line, tend to hold up well over time.

Conclusion:

The ASICS Gel-Nimbus 27 continues to be a top-tier daily trainer, offering a high stack height and balanced ride. The updated upper provides a better fit and improved ventilation, while the midsole remains plush yet responsive. I plan to keep using this shoe for easy and recovery runs.

Who Should Buy the ASICS Gel-Nimbus 27?

  • Runners in search of a high-cushion shoe for daily training and long-distance efforts.
  • Those who enjoy a slightly firmer, more responsive ride while still benefiting from ample cushioning.
  • Individuals looking for a durable shoe with a breathable and accommodating upper.

Who Should Not Buy the ASICS Gel-Nimbus 27?

  • Runners who prefer an ultra-soft, plush ride.
  • Those looking for a lightweight shoe designed specifically for speed workouts or racing.

With its well-rounded design, the Nimbus 27 continues to be a reliable choice for runners seeking comfort and longevity in a daily trainer.
