Summary

Ideal for braving windy, cold conditions through the winter months. Relaxed fit through legs and external drawstring allows for layering below the wind pant. As the temperature drops and wind kicks up, these are my daily go-tos for outdoor sessions.

Smartwool Women's Active Fleece Wind Pant Review

As much as I love a good fitted legging, these wind pants have given me a new appreciation for a relaxed fit and serious insulation. From first wear, the Smartwool Active Fleece Wind Pant impressed me with its comfort and quality. Before we jump into more detail, here are some specs to consider:

  • Made in Vietnam
  • Main Body: 47% Polyester, 38% Wool-Merino, 15% Elastane
  • Overlay: 85% Nylon, 15% Elastane
  • Pockets: 100% Polyester

Additionally, if you've never worn wool for athletics, it's worth noting the care instructions from the company to prolong the garment life.

Care

  • Machine Wash Cold Gentle Cycle
  • Wash With Like Colors
  • Do Not Bleach
  • Dry Flat
  • Cool Iron As Needed
  • Do Not Iron Decoration
  • Do Not Dry Clean

Features

Reflective elements line both pockets. You'll also find some smaller markings on the back of the pant legs.
The 4-way stretch knit fabric (bottom) is light and allows for full range of motion. Wind protective paneling (top) extends from the hip to knee.
Leg cuffs are slightly gathered in a jogger style, making for an insulated fit.

Performance & Fit

The Active Fleece Wind Pant has worked its way into my rotation seamlessly. Paired with the Active Fleece Wind 1/2 Zip, the two pieces from Smartwool are staples in my winter running and biking wardrobe. I'm pleased with the fit of the wind pant, as it balances flexibility and form. For my cyclists out there, you won't have to worry about the pant legs getting caught in your chain, but the soft, stretchy knit fabric allows for full range of motion without any restriction.

Sizing: I usually wear size XS in pants and tops, but the wind pant wasn't available in XS. The small works perfectly though. The external drawstring provides plenty of security in the waistband and the relaxed fit in the legs is nice for layering underneath.

Durability: after multiple wear, wash, and dry cycles, the pant doesn't show any signs of damage. The Merino wool inside of the pants does hang onto hair and fuzz, so a lint roller might be in order. Since this wind pant retails for $180, it's nice to know that the investment will go the distance!
