The original Superblast was my all-time favorite, and I wore out six pairs...something I haven’t done with any other shoe in recent memory. I was so excited to try the second version. Although it was hard to actually get my hands on a pair because they sold out so quickly.
The ASICS Superblast 2 builds on the max-cushioned, versatile design that made the first version such a hit, especially for those of us who crave comfort on long runs. Though it gained a bit of weight, the Superblast 2 still delivers the smooth, cushioned ride that’s perfect for daily training. Honestly I don't feel too much of a difference.
Quick Facts
Not that color should matter, but I am a big fan of the deep purple/magenta color of the new version. As you can see by how dirty the shoe is, I've already put a lot of miles on it. The Superblast 2 has an updated upper that improves breathability. The new mesh is noticeably airy around the toe box, which is ideal for those warmer days here in the Mojave Desert. Comfortable, breathable shoes are essential, and sweaty feet are no fun!
A good running shoe should feel like it disappears on your feet, and the ASICS Superblast 2 does just that. I haven’t experienced any hotspots or discomfort, although some might find the heel counter sits a bit high.
ASICS generally runs on the more narrow side and I've found this to be true with the Superblast 2. The upper feels snug without being restrictive, and the semi-gusseted tongue stays put for a secure fit. I typically wear between a women’s 10-11 wide, and size 11 fits me well...just like all my ASICS.
The Superblast 2’s midsole delivers on the max-cushion feel without needing a carbon plate, thanks to the mix of FF Turbo+ and FF Blast+ Eco foams. This foam combo provides a stable, responsive ride that’s great for long runs and recovery days. I love how much cushion it has.
The cushioning is generous, though the Superblast 2 doesn’t necessarily bring speed at faster paces. It’s a more balanced, medium-firm shoe, ideal for a variety of workouts but not a racing shoe. Plus, because the Superblast 2 features such a high stack height, it's technically illegal to use in races. Is World Athletics going to come after someone who isn't winning money? Probably not, but just an FYI. For me, the Superblast 2 keeps that “do-it-all” feeling I loved in the original...perfect for most days, from easy jogs to long miles. In short, the Superblast 2 doesn't feel much different ride wise, than the original which is what I wanted.
One of the biggest improvements with this model is in the outsole. ASICS added some texture to the rubber lugs, which makes for better grip on both dry and wet surfaces. They also designed the outsole to prevent stones from getting lodged...a definite improvement since I dealt with a few rock “stowaways” in the first version. I’ve taken the Superblast 2 on sandy trails and through some rain, and it’s handled every situation. I haven't slid around.
Durability seems promising, too. I’m about 100 miles in, and there’s minimal wear on the outsole. I can see these easily making it to the 400-mile mark. I’m already planning on a second pair when this one’s done!
The ASICS Superblast 2 remains a solid, max-cushioned trainer that’s versatile enough for a range of paces and distances. The updates are subtle but make a difference in comfort and traction, especially for those who log higher mileage. I’m glad ASICS didn’t make any drastic changes; it’s just as reliable as the original!
