West Line Winder Review

The West Line Winder (WLW) Trail Races, hosted by Freestone Endurance, offer a 50k option and a 30k option, both of which are great for experienced and newbie trail runners alike. The 2024 event collaborated with Camp We Run Long (WRL), "a space for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color to learn and experience the joy of being in the outdoors and on the trail" whose "goal is to grow the presence of under represented communities in trail running and to amplify diversity at races, together." Also, since at least 2023, WLW has offered a non-binary gender division with top 3 finisher awards. The collaboration with Camp WRL and the inclusive gender divisions, along with a land acknowledgment at the start of the races, create a wonderfully inclusive and celebratory environment especially for folks who often don't see their identities represented, reflected, or affirmed in trail running events.
The courses themselves are challenging yet fairly beginner-friendly (with the right training and preparation of course!). The 50k starts out on local bike trails, climbs up to some forest roads, loops down to some quiet sections of trail with views of nearby 14ers, and finishes again on bike trails. Being in late September, the event typically offers mild temps and fall foliage.
Participants may encounter bike riders on the trails, and the downtown Buena Vista area is typically pretty busy during the event weekend due to 14er Fest, but in my experience neither of these factors have been bothersome. For folks who are into 14ers, race registration can be paired with the 14er Fest registration. Runners can also sign up for the Sawatch 50/50, which includes the WLW 50k and the Sawatch Ascent 50k the following day (also hosted by Freestone Endurance).
