As an avid trail runner and somewhat regular road cyclist, I wanted a headphone option that would allow me to hear my surroundings while also listening to music, podcasts, books, etc. Shockz is all the rage in the running community, so I decided to give myself a birthday present this year.
The OpenRun Mini Specs:
I'd recommend these bluetooth headphones to anyone who is seeking a safer way to listen to their media while on the bike or on a run. Although they are on the pricey side (~$130), the OpenRun Mini is a middle-of-the-line option for the brand. Shockz' upper end model (the OpenRun Pro) offers a slightly higher battery life and less charge time, but they aren't water resistant (IP55).
I was a bit worried about the OpenRun sizing initially, but the website offers guidance to help customers decide if the mini version is right for them...and I am SO glad I went with the mini. The band fits snugly to my head and doesn't bounce or interfere with headwear (hats, helmets, headbands, etc.). My only complaint is that they do put pressure on my temple area that can become uncomfortable over long periods of time--anyone who wears glasses might understand the sensation.
The sound quality is impressive for bone-conducting tech. Even when I'm running or riding in windy conditions, I can usually hear my music. On the other hand, I have found that podcasts and audiobooks tend to be a bit more difficult to hear with wind.
The quick charging feature of the OpenRun Mini is one I've used many times when the headphones are almost dead and I want to get out the door on a run. I just plug them in for a few minutes and they're good to go!
So far, after MANY hours of use, I'd argue that these headphones are worth the investment!
