ASICS Metaspeed Edge Paris Review

The ASICS Metaspeed Edge Paris has undergone a significant update this year, making it one of the lightest and fastest super shoes on the market. Previously overshadowed by the Metaspeed Sky, the latest iteration of the Metaspeed Edge has been updated to a shoe of its own. Finally, because it has felt like the Metaspeed Edge has just stood behind the Sky.

If you're new to the ASICS carbon-plated shoes, there are two: the Metaspeed Edge Paris and the Metaspeed Sky Paris. The Edge is designed for those who run more on their toes and have a higher cadence. There is generally more cushion towards the front of the shoe. The Sky is designed for those who run more on their heel and may have a longer stride, so there is more cushion in the heel. Both are good options, but you have to find the one that is best for you.

Quick Facts about ASICS Metaspeed Edge Paris

  • Weight: 6.5 oz
  • Drop: 5 mm
  • Cost: $250
  • Use: Racing, workouts

Upper and Fit:

The Metaspeed Edge Paris features the new "Motionwrap 2.0" technology in the upper, which offers a significant improvement over previous versions. In my experience, the previous version's upper is what really kept me away from the shoe. It ripped through my skin and produced some of the nastiest blisters and cuts I've ever had (especially on hilly courses). Thankfully this year, it's been updated and I actually haven't had any issues (and I've run a few hilly courses). So the upper is much better.

Other features include the ribbed laces and a thin, non-gusseted tongue. The upper is good and I haven't had any issues with it (finally).

In general, ASICS tends to run more narrow, and the Metaspeed Edge maintains a narrow profile, so if you have wider feet, you might need to go up a half size. My feet are on the wider side and I've found that the women's size 11 fits the best.

Midsole:

The shoe's midsole uses ASICS's FF Turbo+ PEBA compound, paired with a rocker geometry and a strategically placed plate to enhance the shoe's bouncy and responsive ride. This combination makes the Paris feel faster than ever before. The midsole's design is particularly suited for runners who prefer a less cushioned, more racing-flat feel but want that modern technology of a carbon plate. (Hey, I am one of those people).

The ASICS Metaspeed Edge is made for racing and workouts and I only use it for that. Some racing shoes I'll also do the warm-up and cooldown, but truthfully I've been a bit cautious to even do that in the Metaspeed Edge. They are strictly a workout or racing shoe.

Outsole:

The ASICS Grip technology used in the outsole provides excellent traction on both wet and dry surfaces, making the Metaspeed Edge Paris a good choice for various weather conditions. However, it's important to note that this shoe is not intended for trail running so don't take them out on the sandy trails (I don't even do my speed workouts on the trails).

The expected durability of the outsole aligns with other carbon-plated models, offering around 100-150 miles. While sure, you may still be able to run in them after that, you aren't getting the same carbon plate advantage.

Conclusion:

I cannot emphasize this enough, but the ASICS Metaspeed Edge Paris stands out as the best iteration yet, with significant updates in almost every part of the shoe. The shoe is ideal for runners who favor a midfoot or forefoot strike and appreciate a fast, responsive ride.

Who should purchase the ASICS Metaspeed Edge Paris? Runners looking for a lightweight, carbon-plated shoe that excels in speed and responsiveness, especially those who run primarily on roads and have a higher cadence.

Who should not purchase the ASICS Metaspeed Edge Paris? If you find yourself heel striking more, then the Metaspeed Sky would likely be a better choice for you. Also, if you are looking for a daily trainer, you will prefer something else because the Metaspeed Edge is not made for easy runs.
