Mizuno Wave Rider 27 Review

The Mizuno Wave Rider 27 is well-established running shoe. Very few shoes have been around for 27 versions! This brand stands out for its unique firmness; when people try on a Mizuno running shoe, they either love it or hate it! This can be both good and bad for Mizuno and if users don't like the updated version, they don't have a lot to fall back on.

I was curious: Is the Mizuno Wave Rider 27 a good running shoe? I've never hated the unique firmness of the brand on daily runs.

Mizuno Wave Rider 27 Stats:

  • Weight: 9.9 ounces.
  • Heel to Toe Drop: 12 millimeters.
  • Price: $140.00.
  • Made for: Daily training.

Saying the Mizuno Wave Rider 27 is "basic" implies it's not that great. Basic isn't bad, but it's a traditional running shoe made for the meat of running. It's not made for fast runs or recovery runs, but the daily grind we all get out and do.

The latest model includes a new upper and a slightly softer feel compared to its predecessors while maintaining its traditional 12 mm heel drop. In the realm of daily running shoes, the Mizuno Wave Rider 27 stands out as being one of the more firm options.

Upper:

The updated Wave Rider 27 introduces lighter materials for its upper. The tongue is comfortably soft yet thick, which may impact breathability. When I took out the Wave Rider 27 in warmer conditions, I found the upper didn't breathe as well. I couldn't find many other reviews that said something similar, although I am someone who lives in one of the hottest places in the world. Is it terrible that my feet sweat and then start to blister? No, but it's not ideal for warmer conditions.

The best running shoe uppers disappear off your feet and for the most part, the Mizuno Wave Rider 27 does just that. The update and cushioned heel is one of my favorite parts of the shoe.

Mizuno advertises the use of "eco-friendly materials" in this model, though detailed information on this aspect is scant. The shoe has broadened over time, catering to a wide range of foot shapes.

In terms of fit, Mizuno shoes typically lean towards a narrower design, and the Wave Rider 27 follows this trend. For reference, a size 11 has usually been my size for Mizuno running shoes and this was no different.

Midsole:

Most updates in the Wave Rider 27 are concentrated in the upper, with minimal alterations to the sole. Which is great, considering people want a consistent running shoe.

This decision to keep the Wave Rider 27 similar to the Wave Rider 26 aligns with the popularity of the Wave Rider 26's ride quality.

Technology: The shoe features "MIZUNO ENERZY FOAM," aimed at delivering a soft and adaptable ride, slightly more cushioned than its predecessor. The signature Mizuno Wave plate efficiently disperses impact, enhancing stability and comfort. If you've never run in Mizuno, the wave plate is what keeps the shoes firm. It's essentially a piece of plastic that disperses energy when you land. This year it runs heel to midfoot and consists of a redesigned elastic, thermal plastic wave. This makes it more springy and cushioned.

The Wave Rider 27 is an ideal shoe for routine running, adept at handling a variety of training scenarios. It's particularly noted for its firmer feel, a distinct characteristic in the Mizuno lineup. The continued presence of a 12 mm heel-to-toe drop, a feature becoming less common in modern running shoes, is a notable aspect of this model.

Outsole and Durability:

The Wave Rider 27 features an X10 outsole, made from carbon rubber, which distinguishes the Wave Rider 27 from other brands that often use blown rubber. But keep in mind, there is blown rubber on the forefoot. (Blown rubber is definitely not bad, but carbon rubber is far more durable).

The carbon rubber material choice enhances durability and traction. The shoe performs well in various conditions, including sandy trails and wet weather. I haven't had any issues sliding around.

As far as durability, Mizuno is known to last, and the Wave Rider 27 is no different. My guess is it will last somewhere between 400-500 miles.

Mizuno Wave Rider 27 Conclusion:

The Mizuno Wave Rider 27 excels as a daily training shoe. It's a great workhorse trainer that might not always get the fanfare but helps you go the miles. My only real complaint is that it retains heat in the upper. This is fine for now and the winter season.

Who should purchase the Mizuno Wave Rider 27?

The Mizuno Wave Rider 27 is well-suited for runners seeking a reliable, everyday shoe for daily training. If you have more narrow feet, you'll likely appreciate the Mizuno Wave Rider 27 more.

Who should not purchase the Mizuno Wave Rider 27?

The shoe's breathability issues make it a less preferable option for hot weather running. Plus, its distinct firm feel makes the shoe one you want to try before buying. =
