Summary

As a middle of the pack runner, I was interested to see how I could benefit from an speed shoe. Enter the Hyperion Max. It's a non plated shoe built for speed while offering tons of cushion, all at a fairly reasonable price for most casual runners.

Brooks Hyperion Max Review

Overview

I got into running in my late 30s, and I'm in my 3rd year of racing. Most days, I consider myself a casual, middle of the pack runner. I'm not "fast" by any means, but I love getting out there and logging miles as both my mental and physical health have benefitted greatly from it. But I'm also looking for ways that I can continue to improve. After spending most of the last couple of years focusing on distance (8 half marathons and 2 marathons) I decided that I wanted to shift to speed.

I'm a Brooks guy when it comes to road running. I've tried lots of brands, and Brooks just perform the best for me from a comfort and longevity standpoint. I wear Glycerin 20s for most of my runs. Enter the Hyperion Max...

I'm wrapping up marathon training right now, but I've added in 1-2 speed sessions a week since I received the Hyperion Max. I was a little concerned about transitioning from the Glycerins as the cushion on them is so soft, but the Hyperions are almost equally as soft. However, what very little they lack in cushion, they make up for in speed. I've logged 30 miles in these so far, and I'm definitely seeing huge benefits. Most noticeable for me have been lower perceived effort at faster paces and the assistance that the curve provides with hill work.

What I love

  • Fast - These shoes transition super fast. Both the toe and heel are curved, which Brooks refers to as their Rapid Roll Technology. It takes a little getting used to, but once you do... wow!
  • Well Cushioned - I like a lot of cushion, and Brooks has done a great job providing that without adding a lot of weight. These shoes use the Brooks nitrogen infused DNA Flash cushioning - stable, but soft.
  • Flexible - I was looking for a speed shoe without a plate. Most plated shoes tend to be stiffer. I had foot surgery in 2010, and stiff shoes just hurt.
  • Lightweight - My jaw dropped the first time I held these. At 7.8oz per shoe, you almost forget you're wearing them.

What I didn't care for

  • Tongue Slides - The only knock I have on them so far is that the tongue tends to slide a bit. After some research I adjusted the lacing to go through name band instead of over and have not had an issue since. Images included for reference.

Overall, I could not be more thrilled with this shoe. I'm thoroughly impressed with the increased speed without sacrificing comfort. My next marathon is in 3 weeks, and I will be racing in these. If you're looking for an entry into speed shoes, I would highly recommend giving the Brooks Hyperion Max a shot!

Lacing - Go through instead of over!

These will arrive with the lacing over the name band. The tongue slipped for me on my first few runs. After a little research, I found that relacing would help. I went through the band and have had zero issues since!

David Moore Great review Mike! I just picked up a pair of these at the Cleveland Marathon expo and raced the half in them. Great first impression!!

Mike Murphy I hope you love them as much as I do. I'll hit 125 miles in them this week and the tread still looks brand new. So impressed with how well they've held up.
