The Oak Barrell Half Marathon is a scenic, challenging course. If you plan to do this race one year it is highly recommended you throw in some speed work and lots of hill repeats as you will need it. The Oak Barrell Half is most famous for Whiskey Hill, a hill which starts at the 3 1/2 mile mark and goes well into mile 4. You actually get a special time for that course of the race is there a separate starting line for it and once you get to the top there is often live music, a cheering station and a water stop as a reward for getting up that hill. Just like a lot of the other races a lot of the stops are themed and after about mile 4 you have the option of using electrolyte drinks or water and then you can get other various types of food and gels at later stations. Once you've crossed the finish line chances are you may be hungry and ready for various types of food and drinks. One thing this race definitely does not lack is food options. You can get everything from chili to tacos to grill cheese and many other dishes that you may not have even considered consuming after running 13.1 miles. The last unique thing that happens with this race is since the race starts at the distribution plant for where Jack Daniel's whiskey is made you can actually purchase a bottle (this is extra and not included in the registration fee) with your name and time engraved on the bottle.
I've run this race twice and out of the 15-20+ half marathons I've done this course is one of the toughest. The water stops often have a sense of humor. It's not uncommon for the song highway to hell being played at the top of Whiskey Hill. I've found the food to be delicious with a scenic route and an overall fun race but I would not recommend it if your trying to set a PR or trying to qualify for something.
