The Mach 4 is the newest (until March) model of hokas mach lineup. While it is advertised as a light and fast trainer, I would place it more towards the tempo and racing shoe line up. Closer to the rocket x than the bondi. The bottom of the shoe is completely composed of hokas soft foam with no rubber to grab to road. This questions the durability of the shoe which places it more towards the racing aspect for me.
During the runs, this shoe is considerably soft even for hokas standards but does not feel clunky like typical trainers. It tends to run small but for someone with wide feet and bunions, a half size up worked perfectly for me. These shoes are fast and light making them perfect for community races and even for triathlons after being in the bike. Soft enough to take the impact from the road but responsive enough to sprint and maintain a quick pace when needed. If you are looking for something to compliment your daily trainers and give you a soft but adequate race shoe then look no further!
I have these shoes dedicated as race and speed work shoes in triathlon training. Out of the box these were the most comfortable I have ever worn. I have done up to 8 miles and my feet have felt great! Plan to use them in triathlons and community races up to 1/2 marathon. Very comfortable and fast shoes. Great as racers but I would not classify them as a daily trainer. They work very well in combination with the bondi 7 model for training and racing.
