The PF 60 Mint & Lemon Chew delivers 60g of carbs in one easy-open wrapper with a light, not-too-sweet flavor. While a chew isn't ideal for hard efforts, this one works well for easy runs, rides, and ultra fueling variety. Pricey, but practical.

Precision Fuel and Hydration PF 60 Chew Review

Chews occupy an interesting middle ground in endurance fueling: more substantial than a gel, yet easier to digest than real food. Realistically, chews aren't the best option for redlining efforts, but they are an enjoyable addition to my easy runs and rides.

The Precision Fuel & Hydration PF 60 Chew Bar won’t replace gels as my preferred fuel for hard running, but its light Mint & Lemon flavor, streamlined packaging, and 60 grams of carbohydrate per wrapper make it a useful source of variety during longer, steadier efforts.

The Basics

Each PF 60 Chew Bar provides:

  • 60 grams of carbohydrates
  • 240 calories
  • 40 milligrams of sodium
  • No caffeine
  • 68-gram total product weight
  • $4.33 per chew

Flavor & Texture

Mint and lemon could become an aggressive flavor combination in the wrong hands, but Precision keeps it light. The flavor is pleasant, refreshing, and not excessively sweet, an important distinction several hours into an endurance event, when even a beloved gel can begin tasting like despair.

I personally prefer the Mint & Lemon chew over the Original PF 60 flavor. I already use Precision gels regularly, and the Original chew occupies a similar flavor lane. Mint & Lemon gives me another option without introducing an especially strong or polarizing taste.

The PF 60 has a soft chew texture that doesn’t feel excessively sticky in my mouth or cling relentlessly to my teeth. It still requires a meaningful amount of chewing, though.

During an easy run, steady ultra effort, or endurance ride, the texture is manageable. During intervals, steep climbing, or a harder race effort, chewing becomes much less appealing. This isn’t a problem unique to Precision. chewing while redlining is generally awful.

I would choose a gel or drink-based carbohydrate source when intensity is high and breathing takes priority. For easier training sessions and long endurance events, however, the chew provides a more substantial texture that can break up a gel-heavy plan.

Packaging

Precision has simplified the PF 60 packaging by eliminating the cardboard tray previously used with its PF 30 Chews. The wrapper is easy to open, and removing the tray reduces unnecessary packaging and bulk.

I also prefer carrying the 60-gram bar over two separate 30-gram chews. If I’m targeting approximately 60 grams of carbohydrate per hour, the PF 60 gives me that amount in one wrapper. That means fewer packages to carry at the start and fewer pieces of trash to store (or accidentally drop) afterward.

Value

At $4.33 per bar, the PF 60 isn’t cheap. Buying a box of 20 does not currently appear to reduce the per-unit cost, with individual bars working out to the same price.

The value looks better when considered on a cost-per-gram-of-carbohydrate basis. One PF 60 replaces two 30-gram fuel servings while reducing the number of wrappers I need to carry. Still, I would like to see a meaningful bulk discount for runners and cyclists purchasing full boxes for regular training or racing.
