I tested the Women’s North Face Altamesa 300 as a casual runner on clean, mildly technical trails with rolling elevation, and overall, it left a strong impression.
Coming from low-stack shoes with a natural toe box, I was initially concerned about losing ground feel or comfort, but this shoe balances both surprisingly well. The cushioning is noticeable without feeling overly soft, and the responsiveness makes it feel quick and capable rather than bulky. There’s also a stable, planted feel underfoot, which inspired confidence on uneven terrain.
The toe box has enough room to avoid feeling restrictive, while still maintaining a secure fit. One standout feature is the outsole. It appears extremely durable and performed well across varied terrain. The 4mm lugs provided reliable traction, even through muddy sections.
The shoe isn’t waterproof, but that isn't a deal breaker for me. After years of obstacle course racing, I prefer breathable shoes that drain well rather than hold water, and these handled creek crossings exceptionally well, shedding water quickly and staying comfortable.
Overall, this is a thoughtfully designed trail shoe that performs well across a range of conditions, with durability and sustainability as added bonuses. A great option for runners looking to transition from minimalist footwear without sacrificing comfort or performance.
