Summary

Liquid IV's newest addition to the lineup and a great boost for those tired mornings and long runs. It gives a great little dose of caffeine without that "buzz" that leads to a headache.

Liquid IV Energy Multiplier - Yuzu Pineapple Review

For a little background: I'm a mega-fan of Liquid IV products. I've tasted nearly all of the flavors in the original lineup (noncaffeinated). I find them a great component in my summer training and recovery. The portability and flavor profiles are great! While I'm not a fan of caffeine (read: I only have it once a week at most), I am a human. Humans sometimes are exhausted or lethargic, even when we need to run. Enter the "Energy Multiplier" Liquid IV.

Why "Energy Multiplier"?

If you're like me, you may wonder what makes the "Energy Multiplier" Liquid IV different than the normal Liquid IV. I'm no expert, but the main difference I see is that the Energy Multiplier (currently available in two flavors) has a "proprietary energy blend" that "provides physical energy and cognitive boost." In layman's terms: it has about 100mg of caffeine.

I'm not a coffee drinker, nor do I have caffeine as a normal part of my routine. As I'm training for my first ultra, though, I've noticed that caffeine can be a strategic boost once in a while. So, I typically have the Energy Multiplier once a week, prior to my long run. That--in tandem with normal hydration to combat any diuretic effect of the caffeine--has been great. I've noticed that I'm more alert when starting my run, yet I don't have the caffeine crash that I often hear about.

Drawbacks?

Most grocery stores sell Liquid IV now, but it's not at a pricepoint that rivals with that of Propel or Gatorade (even in powder form). I see Liquid IV as a runner-specific supplement, though. If I view it that way, and not as a casual drink for fun, the value is a lot easier to see. I will pay a bit more to have the electrolytes and energy I need to perform and recovery the best I can. But that is absolutely something to consider, because I typically can't find the Energy Multiplier for less than $8 for a box of 6 powder mixes.

Comments

Jeff Toda I agree entirely, and while pineapple causes my mouth to feel raw, I love most of the other flavors. I will add that Costco often has the 30 packs for $22-28 so if you really enjoy LiquidIV a Costco membership is rather beneficial

Hannah Hartzell I recently started buying the normal ones at Costco. Definitely a great deal! My only frustration is that they only have 1 flavor combo available (at least at my Costco): golden cherry and watermelon. It’s worth it though!
