Lactigo works. The reduced burning sensation in your muscles makes you feel like you're not working as hard as usual. It's hard to say how much further or faster it's letting me run before my muscles are overwhelmed with the effort, but the company did studies on cyclists and other athletes and are confident it can improve time to fatigue and power output by up to 4%. Even if it's .5%, I enjoy the product because 1) Placebo effect. Feeling less burn makes me feel like I'm stronger, and that alone may make me so. 2) It goes on quick and easy, and if you use the Menthol version (which I prefer when it's hot out) you'll feel it almost immediately, which makes you feel like it's go time! 3) It's not ridiculously expensive, so buying a small container and giving it a try is low consequence. If you use it for just one hard workout per week, a small container will last months.
I've used Lactigo during races, tempo runs, and time trials (often running uphill) lasting 3 minutes to 1 hour. When I put the gel on I feel ready to go work hard; it primes me mentally for the task at hand, and I always feel stronger for longer when I use it. I've used it maybe 50 or 60 times over the past 18 months (roughly once a week, excluding down weeks and some off weeks) and it feel like it does what it's advertised to do. I'll keep using it for hard workouts and races.
