The price point of these shoes is the major attraction, and for the casual athlete, these are likely good enough. These shoes will get you through short workouts, low impact runs, and general daily activity. The fit and sizing of this shoe meet expectations, with the toebox being a bit larger than typical. The outsoles are quite durable in this model, and in general the quality of the shoe is good. The AmpliFoam technology is not that springy, but it is durable as well. The insoles and cushioning are very soft. There is moderate ventilation, and they are somewhat heavy.
I have been running with ASICS Gel-Contends for years now. I used to use the Gel-Contend 5, which would typically last me the 300-400 miles expected on a shoe, and was good enough to hold up for long runs as well as higher impact track workouts. Since moving to the Gel-Contend 7s, I've noticed the cushion has become considerably softer, no longer protecting my foot during high impact activity. These shoes have been comfortable for daily walking/use, but I have found they are no longer good for long or intense runs. Outsole durability may have improved since the 5s, but the insoles have crushed quickly. I also found that while it appears to have a lot of ventilation, my feet overheat quickly in these shoes. I went and bought a different shoe altogether for my daily runs.
