Summary

An expensive enhancement to our running program. It is worth the cost? Bottom line: Yes, But. It is a solid product and has its merits but it's not a super fuel that's going to make you an Olympian.

Ketone-IQ Classic Shot Review

This is a very tough review.   I'm going to break it into several categories, using it as a daily supplement. Using it as a pre-race fuel, and using it as a during race fuel.  I'm going to attach some of my data so you can look at and compare apples to apples.  Definitely a lot of merits with this product I'm not sure it's worth the price.

If you've clicked on it once you'll see all sorts of ads in all of your social media with all sorts of claims about this product.    To test it, I bought five boxes, six bottles a piece, of the ketone IQ and the ketone IQ+ caffeine. The +caffeine messed with my stomach, so I did a separate review for that one.  I took one bottle of ketone IQ or the  +caffeine everyday, And on my last testing day I actually had three of them but I'll discuss that later on.

Some of my background in case you're unfamiliar, is I try to be low sugar or no sugar.  Right now my primary fuels are hammer gel with caffeine and UCAN Edge gel.   If I'm doing a long run testing I'm using those in combination with the ketone IQ.   On long runs I feel every 5K.  If you're familiar with pro athlete Emma Bates, I use a very similar feeling schedule to her even though I'm 180 lb middle-aged guy.

With that said the first positive side effect to discuss is the fat burning. As the point of ketone IQ is to put you into ketosis so you burn fat, I have noticed that my love handles on the side of my waist are smaller than they were a month and a half ago.   I am in the middle of marathon training and I'm somewhere between 170 and 180 at about 6 ft tall.   I am not trying to lose weight but I am losing body fat.  I was at the same training regiment last year preparing for New York City Marathon at about the same training level and did not have that effect last year.  Can I definitely say that ketone IQ is causing me to burn fat? No I'm not a scientist or Doctor, but there is a correlation; Causation undetermined.

The bottle.

Regular and +caffeine

There's a lot of discussion about the little bottle, and HVMN already is marketing a pouch as well.  I'm going to say stick with a little bottle.  The taste is absolutely disgusting, BUT with this little bottle you can drink it really fast.  I can't imagine trying to get it out of a pouch.  The pouches are similar to the UCAN gel I use, and that would just be unnecessary suffering of the nasty taste.

Using it as a pre-race supplement.

Pre race mix

I saw pro athlete Sara Hall talk about her mix of UCAN Edge and Keytone IQ.  I used it for the Hartford Marathon Foundation Summer Solstice Trail run.  This was my third attempt at this course which is part of a Trail Racing circuit.

I love this combo for 5k-10k distance.   Felt amazing. Had great focus on the trail, and my best performance on that course to date.

Taking Keytone IQ during a run

18 mile run, shot taken at 9.5
18 mile run, shot taken at 9.5
Shot 1 20 mile run
20 Mile data part 1
Shot 2 20 mile run
20 mi run data part 2.

For all the data nerds like me out there, I attached all my data.

6 seconds faster per mile with the extra shot did it make a difference in performance?  That's tough to say I would say it's inconclusive.  It was 4° warmer I ran at the same time of day and almost  the same route, obviously adding two more miles.

This is where I will say the focus portion of it is spot on.  I was absolutely better focused I was doing math in my head how I can be faster than my wife and run farther than her today.  I feel I had better overall focus on what was going on around me to include all the bike racers I had to share the bike lane with.

Additional data for both of these, At mile 3 I took a hammer gel at mile 6 I took a UCAN Edge, mile 9 a hammer gel, mile 12 UCAN edge, and at mile 15 Hammer gel for both distances.  ( I will be switching to UCAN +caffeine one that becomes available).

Did the Keytone IQ help my running performance?    Yes and No.   The actual muscles in my body, no.... unless you count your brain.   I carry an emergency Slope Side Syrup.  That's the maple syrup which I reviewed last winter, But it is just that pure maple syrup.   The purpose of caring that is if my sugar level gets too low, I start getting brain fog. I can't calculate what pace I need to go to reach my goal etc.   there have been several races especially in the hot weather where I've had to have my syrup, But working with the ketone IQ I feel just the opposite.  I feel hyper-focused and alert.   So in that respect it definitely helps my performance, But not what I expected.

This is brain fuel. It tastes gross but works.
