The Anchor Down Ultra is a race I have come to look forward to every year! It is a wonderfully organized race at Colt State Park in Bristol, RI during the peak of summer.
I have competed in the 12 Hour race for 2 years now, with my 3rd race coming up this August. The venue is beautiful and parking is plentiful. The runner staging area is large, you can set up a spacious camp site although you may not need to use it! The races all begin at 7pm, which can be a change from other ultras as you are mainly running through the night hours. The course is challenging yet scenic- the 2.45 miles laps are broken down into 0.9 miles of technical trail with the remainder on paved surface running by the water (a very small portion run on grass). The laps tick by quickly as you a distracted by making sure you don't trip over roots or by making friends on the course. The weather can be challenging as well, as it is specifically held on the hottest weekend of the summer. This race is not for the faint of heart, it is meant to break you out of your comfort zone and test your limits! You will be in excellent company with your competitors, the volunteers, and the race director, Jay. It is a small event with a maximum of ~220 people between all races. Make sure to run a qualifying race and sign up early if you want a chance to experience the ADU! Get ready to Anchor Down and Run Long!
